Posted a vid and couple pics below. Followed ranger station directions all the way up to here, spent about 3-4 hours so far trying to undo this bottom latch. Been soaking in PB for 2 days. This is passenger, as you can see in the pics I can see the bottom door striker, but I can’t see how the door is latched to it. I’ve had screwdrivers and hammers in there, nothing is seeming to undo this. Pulled up and pried on the lever, as you can see in video, as far as I can tell the lever is all the way up as it should be.
Is it possible maybe it’s the lock?
Im getting worried I’m going to have to cut the strike out from the bottom to get this door to open, kind of not seeing another way unless there’s something I’m missing. Really need someone who’s dealt with this to chime in
Is that a Ranger? If so the bottom latch is cable activated. Behind the handle there are two cables. If I remember correctly the top one operates the bottom latch. If you pull on the inner core while holding the sheath in place it should pop the latch. If the cable has come undone from the bottom latch you should be able to see the lever where the inner cable was attached and pull up on the lever, but you will have to get inside the door to see it. Mine has a door storage hole that gives access. You might be able to see through that half moon shaped hole to find and pull up the lever. It is below the place where the outer sheath is attached to the lock.
Check out the video I posted with the clip, it's at the bottom you may have to download the file, it wouldn't let me post it normally. It's the bottom latch and the actuator is moving up to the "unlock" position. The door is just not opening once here, I've tried kicking prying, I just don't want to ben the door or something.
The 04 we bought a few years ago had this problem.
I tried everything but what finally worked was to have someone stand outside and squeeze the handle while another kicks the bottom of the door hard from inside. The latches have to be replaced once you get it open, they will be severly corroded and it doesnt take much to make them stick.
I didn't realize there was a video. I would try prying the lever the cable goes through up as far as possible, and while doing that have someone push the door bottom in against the weatherstripping to relax the latch. Shaking the door bottom in and out with the lever lifted might also work. Failing that I think I would disassemble the latch from inside the door until it gives up, but I have never solved your exact problem.
Yeah, there's an attached .mov file that you have to download, then open the file, but it's actually better video work than we often see. No shaking camera or fast repositions.
I would offer suggestions on actually fixing the door if I had any, but my truck has the extended cab with no back doors. There's barely enough room for small children back there. I use the space for a subwoofer and amplifier, along with a small toolbox.
Tried lots of kicking, and unfortunately it doesn't seem latch can be disassembled from inside. However, the door strike bolts, and plate are exposed on the bottom and I could probably cut that out as a last resort.
