4R75E (4R70W) reverse band failures, are there any better options?
I'm doing a full tip-to-tail rebuild on a 4R75E that had to come apart due to a broken reverse band (backing up a 5,000lb trailer, hardly an abusive situation). About 175,000 miles on the stock transmission, looks to have been well serviced, and would have easily made it 75,000 more if not for the failure prone band.
Has anyone heard if there is a true upgrade to this band that addresses this weakness. I couldn't find any info that suggests Borg W. is making the new bands any different than they did 20 years ago. The Raybestos bands appear to be their own lining but on the Borg band. There are some Kevlar reinforced options but I haven't heard anything regarding their longevity, and the fact that my supplier (Transend) doesn't appear to offer them makes me doubt their effectiveness.
I don't know of a better band for that location. I would stick with OE. The reverse band can break obviously, but its not that common of failure for that transmission. They like to flake the lining off the band at the leading edges, which may contribute to the band breaking due to the loss of material at those locations.
You're right, the lining wear at the leading edges is common on these. I would think it might make the band more prone to slipping, not sure if it would have any correlation to the bands breaking other than general age and wear. There's two more 4r70w vehicles with broken bands here, just seems to be too common.
