I have a 2002 7.3l its lifted 18 inches with the works..i pulled a trailer threw my yard in 4x4 low in reverse when all of a sudden stopped moving..all of my forward gears work fine still and if the truck is on flat ground in reverse it will slowley creap backwards if i gas it..tranny only has 84k miles on it..are there any typical things that happen to these trannys that can cause this problem before i pay for a full rebuild??
Probably need a rebuild. I don't have the lift, but was towing our big flatbed and skidloader, unloaded it, and went to back the truck up and had nothing. Luckily I parked where I could still pull out.
All forward gears still work fine?? Last year I had my transfer case go out on me, and left me to believe it was the tranny. The "transfer" gear slipped out of the forks and must of put me to the low side, because I could only get to about 40 mph tops, then it slipped out and I had nothing. Since you were towing in 4x4 low, could be something to check.
But i can still go 80 mph on the freeway and if it was transfer case related wouldn't it effext for ward and reverse in the same way??..is there a way to test if it is the transfer case without taking the t case and transmission all the way out and tearing them apart?
