2001 f250 4R100 shifting issues

Truck Symptoms & Data:
  • 2001 F-250, 5.4L, 4R100 transmission.
  • Main drivability issue: At 40+ mph it won’t shift properly or drops out of gear.
  • Lower gears shift with only minimal issues.
  • Overdrive button works (light toggles, affects shifting).
  • EPC pressure at idle: ~34 PSI in most ranges, ~134 PSI in D1. Pressure spikes >300 PSI with throttle blip (not proportional to RPM).
  • Autel shows no fault on SS1/SS2 in live data, but commanding them in active tests does not produce a physical response from the transmission.
  • Communication with Autel is unstable, sometimes cuts out.
Stored Trouble Codes:
  • P0782 – 2–3 shift malfunction
  • P1714 – SSA (Shift Solenoid A)

Given the above symptoms and codes (P0782 – 2–3 shift malfunction, P1714 – SSA stuck on), with weak/no response from shift solenoids during active tests and abnormal EPC pressure behavior (34 psi at idle, 134 psi only in D1, spikes >300 psi with throttle blip), what is the most likely root cause — a failed solenoid pack, wiring/connector issue, or internal hydraulic/mechanical fault — and what is the best next diagnostic step before replacing hard parts?

P1714 can only be set by a stuck solenoid. A wiring issue cannot set this code. The fault is a bad solenoid.

Thanks, I was hoping for a definitive answer like that. This truck has 300,000 miles on it. Is there anything else that I should know about before just replacing the solenoid pack?

I have no problem fixing anything with 300k miles, but as far as I am concerned, I would go through the entire transmission. Sure, that is me and yes, if the engine has that many miles on it too, what are you going to do when that goes? You are getting close to that intersection where you might be fixing something that is not worth it.

I paid $1700 for this truck in 2013...drove it in the rust belt for over 150,000 miles. It's not worth anything more than what is absolutely necessary. It still runs ok, but has an issue with water getting into the #3 spark plug boot...just have to dry it out every now and then.
