i recently installed the micro tuner in my 2000 f250 V10 and i have always had the mentality MORE is better,i have my shift pressure set at the highest level, and was wondering if max is within the limits of the trans or will pump failure be coming? i like how it is now but heard things about possible pump failure.should i be concerned? by the way, i raised the shift points to where it shifts at about 5400 rpms and it really hauls butt!
Yeow, shifting at 5400 RPM??!!. Is that full throttle only or all shifts?
Setting the shift pressure high is also not always the best idea. There are compromises involved for different driving styles.
If you like to street race and like bang shifting and can afford the potential problems with breakage, enjoy. If you want better life from the drivetrain, and you plan to drive normally, I would crank the shift RPM and pressure down.
If you tow, having a higher shift pressure and RPM makes sense, but even then there are limits. I am no expert, so I don't know the limits. I do know with my 94 F250 460 E4OD which I had rebuilt to be "bullet proof" for towing a heavy trailer, my shift points are much lower(460 is slow turner anyway) and the pressure is enough to prevent clutch slippage for best towing life but still mild enough not to bang shift, more of a nice snap.
When I was much younger and had built a car specifically for racing, I went with the "more is better", but then I was willing and enjoyed always tinkering with it and didn't mind fixing stuff. After awhile I got tired of the bang shifting and lack of control in slick conditions.
Now I prefer a long lasting reliable truck. After paying about $2400 for a tranny rebuild, it better last. The rebuild was due to my error and some weaknesses of early E4ODs.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Dec-02 AT 12:56 PM (EST)]yeah it shifts that high @ wide open throttle only, shifts pretty normal the rest of the time.i guess i will try to back down shift press a little at a time and see how it acts.but i have to admit i sure like it now. maybe i should consider a REAL shift kit.my truck is so much faster without that annoying shift delay.thanks for the input Jim. ps i do like to race as my name indicates
