is the 53-56 frame the same width as 67-72?
I picked up a Gen 2 coyote and 6R80 trans. I'm in process of figuring out what parts I need to order. Right now I'm at the fuel tank stage. My understanding is the frame width was 34" until mid maybe late 70s, is that accurate? I just want to confirm before spending money. Here's what I'm looking at - marketed as a 67-72 tank:

You are correct the rear portion of the frame is 34" from the 40's until 1972. The redesign of the 73 pickups saw the frame widen to about 38" iirc. It made more room for the fuel tank to be placed inboard of the frame rails for safety. Width wise you should be fine. What you want to check for is if you have enough room behind the axle for the tank to fit. That tank was likely designed for a 67-72 long box pickup with lots of room between the axle and rear bumper. A 56 F100 short bed is not so blessed.
