6.8 Gas Mpg ? Currently have about 5k miles on my 2023

Have a 2023 f250 xl 2wd 6.8 gas. I'm currently getting 10.5~ mpg.. I saw a post about someone getting 14 while towing? And it was 4x4?? Idk how thats even possible. What are your guys experience with the 6.8 gas. Looking to hear from owners. Thanks

Assuming your truck is factory stock, where are you driving and at what speeds? Those two variables seem to be the reason for the differences in reported mpg.

I had a 2024 regular cab 4x4 XL 6.8L for about 13,500 miles and was averaging 11-13mpg towing a low profile dump trailer with mini excavator totaling 13k lbs or hauling logs in same trailer up to 15k lbs. I also drove that truck empty on the highway for the last 700-800 miles of my ownership and was getting over 17mpg.

I tow on the east coast, close to sea level, rural or highway with almost no stops, and never exceed 65mph. Unloaded travel is the same.

I doubt the truthfulness of someone claiming 14 MPG towing unless it's a lawn mower all downhill with a tailwind. Like jcb said, driving style plays a big part and is it stop and go driving too. I get 14 mpg empty on the highway with my 4x4, in the city it's about 10 mpg and towing depends on how heavy I'm towing, but I have been down to about 6-7mpg towing heavy in the mountains.

That seems a bit low. Really depends on your speed, stop-go traffic and hills. I have a 3.73 7.3 4wd truck and run 93 octane since it was new. Average 13.9 overall. It really drops above 70mph and in the hills plotting along. Towing I’m around 10mpg but I haven’t paid too much attention as most of my miles are without trailer.

Thinking a 6.8 2wd in my same conditions would net another mpg. Driving habits and location are what kill the MPG. Slow down, avoid traffic and live a flat lander life. When I visit the coast besides it being super flat, there’s numerous law officials looking to boost local revenue, so I slow to 68MPH max and with it nice and flat can see almost 17mpg for the coastal trips.

Also, with 5k run a few more miles on breakin, it should get a smidge better.

Good luck.

New 6.8 owner myself, 2024 F250 XLT Super-cab SB 4x4 3.73 gears. Took truck on 240 mile drive and penciled out @ 17mpg, ( lie-o meter read same ) this was on hwy averaging 70mph. When driving in city traffic it's just above 13mpg. Truck just hit 500 miles, and I did my first oil change. What I like about the 6.8 engine is it's fuel requirement of regular gas or E85, and is one of the reasons I downgraded from the 7.3 which is standard with the XLT. This truck purchase replaced my 2018 F150 RCSB 5.0 4x4 3.73 gear, I was using to tow 5k lbs TT. and did a good job averaging 11mpg towing @ 65. Always ran premium fuel in this truck. Running reg fuel in new truck will be cost saver Once new truck is broken in I'll hook up TT and see what I get for MPG......

Regular fuel can be run in the 7.3 that all mine has used 87-89 depending what's at the pump. Just not E85.

All depends on how you use it.

My 7.3L 4x4 gets about 10mpg working around town, with about 1000# in it, everyday. I just got back from vacation... TX-NV-TX... with about the same load, and I averaged 14.5mpg... but I had my foot into it, running 80mph.

I'll be taking delivery of a 2WD 6.8L gasser, soon, but in all honesty, I don't expect the mileage figures to be much different. At the end of the day, the smaller engine is still moving the same weight... so it has to work harder. If it would have been available at my trim level (XL) I would have opted for the 7.3L.

The one thing I don't like about the 6.8 offering is it's only available with the modified F150 transmission. I would much prefer the 10R140 medium duty trans.

I agree but, the 10R140 for the 7.3 is also a modified diesel 10R140.

I wish it was a 5- or 6-speed manual.

mpg on 500 mile road trip

Went on road trip from northwest Indiana to Gatlinburg. About 500 miles each way. 16.5 mpg on the way there. 17.5 mpg on the way back. Only difference was speed. I averaged about 75 on the way there and about 67 on the way back. Unless elevation change was a factor - but i dont think so. Used regular ~87 octane unleaded from a variety of gas stations along the way.

2024 F250 XL, 6.8 gasser, regular cab, 8 ft box, 4x4, snow plow prep package. Nothing in the bed. Tire pressure around 65 psi.

2024 f250 SC, 6.8, 3:73 gear, std box. Has 2300 miles on it and is averaging 17mpg hwy empty, 13mpg in city and 11mpg towing 22’ 5,500lbs TT, plus 500lbs of gear/toys in bed. Very happy so far and hope to get a little better mpg as we put more miles on. Other thing I like about this truck is gas requirement being regular fuel, prior tow vehicle 2018 f150 5.0 rcsb which I always ran premium fuel or it would run rougher and ping occasionally. Mpg with f150 was same as above except for empty hwy as it got 21mpg.

I bought a 2024 6.8 in April and currently have about 13k miles on it. Unloaded, I'm averaging about 15 MPG. I can bump that up to about 17 unloaded on the highway (best I've seen to date). I generally use Eco mode on the highway and normal mode off the highway. I don't use eco mode for MPG, I just like the way it performs on the highway, more apt to use the trucks power in the gear it's in rather than downshift every time you want to accelerate. I have spent some time messing around with eco mode off the highway and it will yield some better MPGs. On highway, normal and eco mode both seem to average out about the same. Towing our 6-7k lb camper, I'm between 8 and 9 MPG. That's also towing through northern New England so not flat at all.
