For a while now I have been experiencing an occasional Turbo boost to the peg (40 PSI) The over boost condition results in a loss of power and the truck falls on it's face. I am tuned but was tuned for a couple years before this problem surfaced. Ford tech thinks my tune is stopping truck from sending a code. Today I replaced my Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor (EBPS). That completes the replacement of all relative sensors, all with Ford parts from the local dealership. I will post up the results. It will be a while as I don't drive it much when I/m home. I wanted to post this as I found a number of posts on the same or similar problem. So far as I know no one has solved the problem. If this sensor doesn't fix it, I am going to have to think the turbo needs replaced. It is my humble opinion that the condition results from the turbo blades failing to function. If that is correct and the sensors are not sending bad data causing an electronic failure it must be mechanical internal to the Turbo. Anybody see it differently?
FIRST ROAD TEST AFTER EBPS REPLACED. INCONCLUSIVE. I exited the neighborhood with truck still cold. Pedal to the floor, my boost alarm sounded (set at 28 PSI) I lifted. From 35 MPH full throttle, down shifted, alarm sounded, I lifted. Repeated that a number of times. For a while I feared I might have mucked something up installing the sensor. Once truck warmed up it ran much better and I could not duplicate the issue. Went to my EDGE and to my surprise I found I had a EBPS PID. Who knew? So I simplified my display with MAP, TURBO BOOST and EBPS displayed. Went back to the highway and did some acceleration tests. Normal numbers were MAP 45, TURBO 24 and EBP 55. Repeated that several times with about the same numbers. Could not make it over boost. Then I got one and when the alarm sounded I stayed on it. The BOOST stopped at 31 PSI. And the turbo seemed to be adding power. In the past it would go to 40 and beyond and turbo power was not being added. I did not get a good read on the other numbers. I was not able to repeat that so I put the truck up and will do another test tomorrow or maybe this PM when the truck is cold. I want to see if the Boost stops at 31 when the truck is cold.
Replaced the Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor. Towed 320 miles with a number of down shifts, merges to the highway and starts. I did not have the problem once. I'm calling it fixed. There is a video online. Not a hard job but hard to get at. I used a crows foot on a skinny 3/8 ratchet to break the big nut loose. Once loose it turned by hand. Same wrench to snug it when reassembling. Hardest part was getting the wire connector back on. Can't see it and not much room for a hand. Should take no more than an hour. Part was (I think) 170 bucks at Ford dealer. WHOOOOOHOOO
