Looks like my PCM was chipped at one time

My Son’s 94 F350 460 has been showing some of the symptoms of an aging pcm. He pulled it this morning to clean it up and check the capacitors for leaks. He sent me these pics of what we think is an aftermarket chip that was put on at on time.
is that what this is?

That is an aftermarket chip. Throw it away. Many are known to cause issues.

Is it ok to keep the end open where it slides on the circuit board or should we try to make a cover?

Seal it up as best you can, there would have been a metalic tape over the opening originally.

Interesting- that plug- on's from the later 90's... and the PCM's 3 years older.
Agreed that that type of connection's not the most reliable...

Me, I'd re- cap the PCM and play around with the 'chip' just to see what it does...

Thats what I figured. I didn’t think that circuit board end would be exposed.

From what I can tell the capacitors dont seem to be leaking. Can they fail without them leaking? Is there anyway to test them with a meter?
we are trying to troubleshoot the stumble/shutter he has at 35-45 mph 1200-1500 rpm.
