I’ve got an E99 F-250SD, with 337k on the clock. It normally starts, runs, and drives great, but after letting it sit for a day, it decided it would crank and damn near light off, but it seemed almost like a computer/sensor is telling it not to start. It blows a ton of white smoke out the back, that smells distinctively of diesel, nothing mixed in.
You can hear it clearly lighting off on multiple cylinders, but it doesn’t start. You can crank it all day, but it doesn’t get any better. (Mind you this was with AND without a block heater, (warmed for about 2-2.5hrs).
The truck has new glow plugs as of about 4k miles ago, a new White-Rogers gpr, which I can confirm is Drawing about 0.75 volts (drawing batteries down from 12.5 to 11.75 when gp’s are on).
Brand new EBP tube, but the sensor is still original. ICP has small amounts of oil in the connector and I know it needs to be replaced, but still reads in the 2200-2600 psi range when trying to start.
Batteries are in good condition, double 850’s.
Am I stupid for thinking that I could have a bad EOT sensor? I really can’t think of anything else besides injectors that would prevent this from starting.
It’s also worth noting that when the truck does start, it runs like **** for the first few minutes (can only go up a hill at roughly 15-20mph, and starts to choke out/cough at higher throttle input) but then runs fine after warmed up. No CEL nor codes saved in the truck.
what tool are you using to read codes and engine parameters?
recommend getting a fuel pressure reading.
how does it run when you unplug the ICP sensor?
how is the engine oil level?
i am using the BafX wireless code reader w/ CarScanner pro. (Not the ideal setup, but it’s what I’ve got for now). It’s got a brand new fuel pump, and over a half tank of fuel. When the ICP is unplugged, it doesn’t really seem to care and runs mostly the same. Engine oil is low, but still within bounds iirc.
I feel like your glow plugs should draw more. I’m 90% sure mine do. Have you tried jumping the 2 large terminals on your glow plug solenoid just to see if it starts easier? I’ve had a bad glow plug solenoid, that is bad right out of the box. It’s worth a try. Key on, jump the terminals for 20 seconds run into the truck and crank it over.
