I have a Holley Street Warrior 600 cfm that I bought remanufactured from Holley back in 2021. When I installed it back then, it ran like ****. It ran like there was a huge internal vacuum leak or something, very high idle, rough, mixture screws had to be way out for it to run and I could not get the idle down. As it was a reman I had no warranty so I just threw it in a box. Well now I'm tired of the POS edelbrock I've been running and figured I would try to fix this Holley. I'm not really sure where to be looking in it for what would be causing this issue as so far it appears to be in good shape as far as the gaskets.
One thing that seems off to me is that with the secondary throttle blades set so the transfer slot is barely visible, there seems to be a lot of space around the blades as you can see in the attached image. I would think this would cause the problem I was having but I'm not sure.
I may just order a new throttle body. I measured the secondary bores though and they're pretty round, only vary about 0.005-0.010" and the base is pretty flat on a straight edge. I'm not sure what's up with it. I don't know if I'll have the drive swap the carb back on and rig up something to block the secondaries. But that just seems like a large gap and a lot of air would be pulling through it.
Why not adjust the secondary throttle stop and close them? Someone has been jacking with it judging by the marks around it.
this is with the secondary stop adjusted so that the transfer slots are barely exposed like I said originally. The set screw is almost backed out all the way to the point that it’s almost flush with the base plate. That’s how I’ve always understood that they should be set. May not be easy to see that in th first pic. And like I said this was a refurb carb directly from holley so someone probably ****ed something up and returned it
So just an FYI, I was setting the secondaries incorrectly. I'm not sure where I had seen/heard that you set them up with the secondary transfer slot showing but that's what I was doing. Regardless, this carb had issues with a high rough idle and lack of adjustment right out of the box before I messed with it. I closed them up which required the stop screw to be turned basically all the way out so that it's about flush with the throttle body which seems odd to me. What I did realize though is that the secondary throttle linkage is either too short, was bent at some point, or something else is off and it was allowing the secondaries to hang open slightly at idle. I did try to bend it a bit but of course it broke. I had already ordered a new throttle body kit but it's on back order until like December. I'm debating buying a new linkage but I'm not sure if the bracket on the secondary throttle shaft could be what the issue is. Regardless I may just wait for the new throttle body.
That transfer slot should be open enough that the part you see underneath looks square. At least that's where you should start.
That is what I thought, but I emailed Holley about it and was told that the secondary transfer slot shouldn't be visible
Edit: I ended up just reassembling the carburetor and going through all of the setup steps one by one which I never did when I initially purchased it like 2 years ago and had the issues. Stuck it on and it was operating normally and starting and running better than the AVS2. I'm guessing the person who returned it that had it before me had maybe opened up the secondaries and I didn't figure it out at the time. The high idle was also set really high.
