It's a very recent purchase. I've owned old vehicles and done plenty of work on them in the past. It's a 64 bone stock 292. My son came by and we fired it up. Didn't change anything, then it died. Check fuel gauge.. empty. Added a few gallons of no additive gas and no change. Drizzled about 1/2 tablespoon of gas into the carb throat. No change. Opened carb and float bowl was about 3/4 full. Checked for spark at plugs, one had a small dim spark, the others had none. I will replace them since they were a mix of brands. Saw a small spark at the points so they are opening.cleaned the rotor, wasn't bad. Cap looks clean at contact locations. It turns over fast but doesn't seem to fire. Before this, it would start at the bump of the key. I've tried setting the choke. I check for disconnected wires everywhere.
Any ideas? I am ready to buy a coil and plugs. Suggestions?
Thanks for the ideas. My son found the problem. Something that looks like a condenser, mounted on the intake near the coil and distributor was disconnected. I connected it's pigtail to the - post of the coil. The old truck starts and runs like new!
Replaced the plugs and it would not start. At the same time, we also filed the points. Well, out of frustration, I then installed Pertronix 1281 kit. When I removed the old points, they were worn, almost completely gone. Now it starts with a bump of the key again. I ordered their coil. I'll post the results of that.

The Pertronix website states that the coil, assuming you got the oil filled one, should be used in the vertical position. The ford bracket places it horizontal for some reason which is the only ford coil that I have seen horizontal.
I did the same. Part #40611 has the internal 3ohm resistance and is epoxy filled to be mounted horizontal.
In one of your earlier post you said a thing mounted by the coil had a wire disconnected, that is probably a ballast resistor. You will no longer need that with the Pertronix coil.

Looks like you and Hiball did your coil homework. Since we're talking about Pertronix, I thought I should mention the spark plug gap. There is a some verbage on the Pertonix website regarding increasing the spark plug gap due to the higher voltage of the coil. I'm sure you already know this and if so what did you decide on the gap?

I left them as they were. All arrived at .042. I'll check after I install the coil and put a few miles on it. It they look too hot, I may bring them back to .040

I see, I set mine at .040 based on what I read on the Pertronix site. It seems that some goes as high as .045. Hope it works well. My 292 is still sitting on a dolly in my shop waitiing on me to install it. I am getting closer to the install though.
I've tried both .035 and .040 and couldn't tell the difference. I maybe wrong but the larger the gap the longer the coil has to build voltage to jump it, that means more coil heat. So it's .035 for me

I just got around to installing the coil. Of course it's cooler out than it has been in a long time. I warmed it up until I could let it idle without the choke. Tomorrow, I will take it around town. So far so great. Thanks for your help. Maybe these messages will help somebody someday.
