check engine light after cold start

Hello!
my apologies if this topic exists in the archives--i'm failing to find it via search (i'm a noob here).

i'd appreciate any knowledgeable hints on my issue, please:
2002 F250 7.3L 2WD
immediately after cold starts (below freezing), my engine light is nearly always on.
while light is on, my throttle/pedal is inactive/ineffective.
after several minutes' idle time (typically 2-8 mins), the light goes
out & all is well.

anyone know the offending part/setting?

thanks for your help

You'll need to scan for trouble codes with ForScan.

As a Band-Aid be sure to plug in the block heater a couple hours before start. Warm oil always helps on a cold start.

@CheezBoy , welcome to the FTE!

Regarding FORScan and the recommended tools to read the DTC, check out the link below.

Link: FORScan + FORScan Lite: Class Tutorial Q&A

If you are wondering where I grabbed the link from in short order, check out the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder which is a sticky thread at the top of this sub-forum. Come back to us with a DTC or two or fifteen and we can help you get the truck right again.

If the throttle is inactive, my first suspicion would be the pedal assembly has lost signal regardless of whether you have a scanner or not. Look inside the plugs for signs of corrosion.

Thanks to all for your support!--i'll summarize:
- i'm obtaining FORscan as we speak
- the issue exists ONLY during cold/lite on condition, otherwise a-ok. i'll nonetheless look at connector--old truck, so who knows?
- oil level is a-ok
- we live up North, so she's always plugged in wintertime. also replaced glowplugs a couple years back.
starting is ok, just the throttle trouble until she idles several mins.

thanks again--i appreciate your willingness to help

Lift the accelerator pedal with your toe or hand before starting the engine. If the pedal functions after that, the idle validation switch (IVS) detent is worn.

If it's the non-adjustable pedal 2002 model, a quick way around this is to use a carbide burr on a die grinder and take a very small amount off of the pedal lever assembly where it contacts the pedal stop in the idle position.

The reason you have a dead pedal is because the PCM needs to see a closed IVS switch (idle) to determine that 1. The switch works (for safety) and 2. To set the minimum accelerator pedal position voltage (APP) for that key cycle.

Here's the location of the stop pin and where a smidgen of metal needs to be removed to gain just a touch more travel from the pedal in the full-up position.
