Rebuilt carb issues

I had Charlie NY rebuild my carb. He found a few issues, power valve not machined correctly, throttle shaft loose.

I received it today, installed, and it started up with some starter fluid. I ran it about 15 minutes in the driveway then decided to take a short drive.

It quit at the stop sign about 100 yards down the road and refused to start. After trying for awhile my neighbors came out and helped me push it home. I checked fuel, spark, all the usual stuff, and eventually it started, acting like it was flooded.

I’m a bit afraid to drive again, thinking it may quit again, so I just drove up and down the driveway. The throttle is extremely sensitive, squealing tires with the slightest throttle movement.

I emailed Charlie, maybe he’ll know what to do, but I figured I’d ask here for ideas too.

Thx

Squealing tires has never been a problem for me. LOL. And I have the new and improved overhead valve engine. I have 101 hp on a good day. What do you have? Maybe your engine is "modified" like Ed's. On a more serious note, good luck finding the problem with your engine. It's just always something it seems--but that's all part of the fun. Right?

I remember the OHV engine, modern innovations. I have a 239 with EAB high compression heads, so I have 106HP. Squealing tires isn’t so much a problem but the whiplash is.

I messed around with it a bit more. It didn’t quit or flood this time, but the throttle response is still extreme. I moved the accelerator pump to the lowest setting, no change.

If you cant figure it out. You might want to bring it to Phil at custom carb in Middlesex he is excellent and has done a few carbs for me. People from all over the country mail carbs to him.

Sorry about your carb issue. You'd expect no problems after a rebuild by a carb guy.

About your sensitive throttle , you might need a different return spring. Is yours correct for your flathead? Or it might be tired and worn out.

Look on eBay for an NOS one or a repopped one.

Interesting thought on the spring. Yes, there’s a guy on eBay that has them, gonna order it now.

Im sure Charlie will stand behind his work. I sent him an email, he’s good at getting back to me, usually in a day of so.

After a few emails back and forth with Charlie he asked me to send the carb back. I like a guy who stands behind his work.

Yep, Charlie will make it right. Anything I got back from Charlie was a bolt it on and go. Pumps, carbs and distributors. Pretty sure he runs them on a test engine after building them. It's funny how most people post up about their engine being sluggish. First time I heard too responsive.

I have wondered how carbs fare in the shipping environment. Seems like with all the rough treatment packages get these days that the float needle could get dislodged, or the float get stuck down.

I can't think what would cause the sensitive throttle. Can you get someone to work the gas pedal while you watch the carb and linkage (engine off)?

Thats a good point. It did act like fuel was flowing unchecked, why else would it flood while driving.

Charlie was thinking PV, but it’s on the way back to him so I’m sure he’ll figure it out. Abe thought throttle return spring. I looked at it, it’s pretty stretched out and I have a replacement on order.

i had mine rebuilt brought it back or to the shop a total of 3x each time it got worse and worse until finally it wouldn’t even start. So finally bought a new repro and all troubles are over. I know of a few people who dislike these Holley’s for this reason.
