An important part of your AWD drive train you may have not thought about lately, is Power Transfer Unit.. PTU. If it goes bad, it will cost you around $1500 to get it fixed.. Here are couple of great YouTube videos on the subject which covers most years.. (some have drain plugs and some don't). It is suggested you change the gear oil every 20-30K.. using 75W140 syn.
Well, I finally gone around to changing out the original gear oil in the Escape's PTU yesterday.. Wow.. was it Black ! (and low on level & crap on the magnet). I used Amsoil Syn 75W140 Serve Gear oil.. Pricey, but worth it.. The Escape has 58500 miles.. Pretty easy job if there is drain plug and you have one of these....
First, known, change on the '10 FEH was ~80Kmiles. It was dark but not gray. Got lucky? Only a couple ounces light when measured.
Picked up Performance Tool W1139 Quart/Gallon pump, this is the cheapest and easiest pump I've found for PTU and rear diff oil changes.
On a set of Rhino ramps and a quart gear oil container the pump is a good size. Purchased another to use with the LV fluid for the transmission.
Drained the old lube and then sacrificed a few ounces to push out any fluid/gunk that was at the bottom of the PTU.
Refilled and drove it around until the next oil change and did the same.
The noise difference was surprising, initially the lack of gear whine from the PTU was substantial. On the second go around the gear noise reduction was again noticeable. And both times the difference in acceleration was also quite noticeable, ~1.2 MPG difference on the display after the first change. Might make this a normal change every 10K miles. On the 2.5/CVT FEH the hardest part is getting the oil to drain out faster.
