Transfer Case Sludge

I recently decided that the noise from the transfer case (divorced NP205) needed to be addressed. I'm in the process of fixing the truck after it has sat for 10 years. I opened the drain plug and a thick sludge tried to make its way out. I ended up taking off the rear covers of the transfer case. It is currently cold outside so the sludge is slowly making its way out. Is there a good way to flush this stuff out. I have read that running ATF through as a flush might work. Any other suggestions? Also, what should I fill it with when I'm ready?

Thanks!

Ive always just drove the truck for a bit before i drained it to get it goood and warm. It flows better that way. And these old trucks call for a pretty thick gear oil in the transfer. I know most people on here use 80-90w gear oil or 85w140 gear oil. I use 85w140 gear oil and it works great. I also use it in my diffs. Happy draining!

Id have to agree with the warming it up. Cruise up the freeway an exit or two then back. Worked well for me. I know my tranny(4 speed) and my transfer had atf runnin in it from the po. I don't think he was just flushin it either >_>
