2017 6.7 Powerstroke told I had the “typewriter tick” well mine wasn’t...
My 2017 f250 6.7 100k miles powerstroke had a light tick that would come and go, it started getting louder when I’d run the truck up a summit and stop to listen. All temps totally normal. Sounded like it was in the transmission/bellhousing. nobody else would usually notice but it Drove me NUTS. Was told by multiple people it was normal, don’t worry it’s just the “typewriter tick”. This truck has no codes and runs AMAZING. Oil is fresh, everything was in check. Tick wasn’t loud enough to hear in the cab only against a wall or in a drive thru. I finally got frustrated and wanted to check out the valvetrain. The tick was NOT audible in the wheelwells or under the hood whatsoever. Only sounded a little bit more noticeable on the passenger side. I pulled the valve cover/intake and found some VERY CONCERNING carnage. On the cylinder 4 rocker assembly 1 rocker had at least 1/8” play on tdc. So I pull the assembly and find all of the pushrods to be worn completely through the hard face and flattened out. I continued my search to find ALL of the assemblies to be worn the same! One was worn so badly the pushrod hole was darn near the same diameter as the tube itself! I don’t know where to start! I’m lost as to what in the world has happened. Very specific maintenance records. Always used 5w40 full synthetic oil. What’s my issue?
all 8 assemblies look like this, all pushrods worn like this or worse. I found 3 broken little clip on retainer things that are located under each rocker arms in the head that have broken off.
This is the wear Ford knows about, was this truck serviced with CJ-4 or CK-4 oil? By far the worst wear I have seen is the 6.7 trucks running Delo XLE but thats for a different thread.
This is the main reason I only use Motorcraft oil. Sure other oils may work but why take the chance. This surly sucks OP. Have you checked the oil; filter to see if this stuff got into the pan?
