I have a 66 f100 with a 352FE and it had been sitting for about 4 years. Once I started it, it ticked like crazy for a while so, I ran some SeaFoam in it for a couple of weeks, changed the oil, and it sounded great. Now, in the past couple of weeks, it has developed a loud tick after the engine gets hot and , it seems to only occur at idle or lower RPM's. I dont hear it at cruising speed. It sounds like one lifter, maybe on cylinder 3 but, I havent pulled the valve cover yet. I was thinking that a lifter would tick when the engine is first started, not after it has been ran for awhile. Am I wrong ? I plan on pulling the vlave covers tommorroe. The local parts house didnt have the rubber gaskets so, they had to order them. I did uses a stethescope to listen the the tick and it is definetly coming from the upper right bank. Am I working in the right direction? Thanks, Cliff
My lifter tick on my dad's 390 was fine when the engine was first started, then it would occur after some time. The most frustrating part for me was it would come and go with no rhyme or reason. All I can tell you is I would not change them with out pulling the intake.
Mine always made noise at times. It's common on FE's that I've been around. Since you ran some cleaner through it, you may have a piece of junk in that lifters valve. Sometimes adding Type F ATF will clean them out.
I have some variable lift hyd lifers in my FE and I have 3 that drive me nuts. I hear them come and go all the time. Soon as the RPM picks up they quiet down. Doesn't hurt any thing except your ears.
Thanks for the information. I think I will try the ATF for a little while and see what happens. When I decided to pull the vlave cover today, it stopped ticking so, I knew it would be in vain. If its not hurting anything, Im not too worried about it. I'll just crank the AM radio up a little louder : )

Your freeking radio actually works ?? YOU LUCKY %^**&*) lol
yeah the after market gauge as a second opinion is just priceless. My OEM dash needle reads about 1/2 what the after market gauge tells me is going on. If it was only a hello your **** outa oil light only that would fkn scare me
Depends on whether the oil pressure is constant. The bypass could be sticking open and at idle the pressure is horrible, then it'll unstick and oil pressure is fine again.
I know, starting to grasp at straws, but anything with ticking, make sure the oil pressure is right first.
You could be chasing a "bad lifter" for a long time...
This may sound strange to some but check for exhaust leaks around the manifolds. An exhaust leak can sound very muck like a ticking lifter. I stopped to look at a '66 F100 with a 352 that was for sale. I was not really in the market for a truck but my curiosity got the best of me. The owner told me that it had a bad lifter and he started it up to let me hear it. I reached in and felt around the rear of the manifolds and sure enough, it was spitting a bit of exhaust that made that dreaded ticking sound. Call me a bandit but i did not correct his diagnosis. I talked him down to $750 and drove the truck home. That was 9 years ago and it is still runing great. Steve
