Losing the war on flash rust
Greetings gang. Still working on the 61 flareside. Trying to do a little body work/painting on my own. I decided tackle the tailgate first since it seemed less complex. Here is the scenario. I used aircraft stripper in attempt to remove existing paint, which was way less than effective. I followed that up with media blasting back to bare metal. I then scuffed entire thing with red scotchbrite pad which left it smooth and shiny. Next I treated twice with ospho to convert any rust. Wash, rinse and repeat. After that I thoroughly washed with degreaser, rinse and toweled dry. Lastly I blew entire thing off with compressed air.. Before I was able to return from my shop with acetone for final wipedown, my tailgate was covered in a bright orange haze. Flash rust. Wiping it down leaves a clean rag orange. I am hesitant to wipe down with acetone, much less mix up epoxy primer to shoot the piece. What am I doing wrong? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Tim

You use a different process then me but............ What I did was strip to bare metal, wash with metal prep and rinse with water. It did the same thing. I then sanded it with 120 to remove it and primered away. No problem at all. I asked the guy that sold me the stuff and he says that is normal, nothing to worry about. Then he used some big words that I don't remember and would never be able to spell anyway.
