56 f100 wiring harness/dash cluster question

I have a 56 f100 that I inherited from my uncle. It hasn't run in at least 5 years and more likely 10.

Finally got it back to my place and decided the entire wiring had to go. So I think I've decided on painless performance kit because of the better instructions.

So here's my question: how do I determine how many circuits I need. I think they have a 14, a 21, and a 28 circuit. It has a 302 out of 87 something according to the block stamp. Edelbrock 2 barrel carb msd 6a ignition. Everything else is more or less stock.

The follow question is: if I were to go to a Dakota digital dash cluster would that effect the harness choice?

It depends on how many electric items you want to add i.e. power window, power locks, ac, etc. You get the idea. If you think you may add it eventually the buy for it now. Better more circuits than not enough.

And no as to your last question, all of the kits will have a circuit for the dash.

My phone made my text all weird so I'll respond in a new post.

Pictures are pretty crappy, got better ones on my kids camera. I worked on this truck with my uncle when I was in high school. Otherwise I might have just let it go. The wiring is shot, the bed isn't correct, the floorboards look like epoxy over rust, the entire truck is there just put into a bunch of Folgers coffee cans.

But dang it I'm going to figure her out and she going to be pretty

I am almost finished installing the Painless 28 circuit universal kit in my 1956 F100. It has more circuits than I need for now, electric fuel pump, electric fan, A/C, power antenna, backup lights, neutral safety switch, power windows, power door locks, etc. But, I left them in and routed the wires to where they would get used if needed. I will say the 28 circuit kit adds a lot more wiring than it originally had. It was a bit of a struggle to cleanly route the under dash wiring. But now that the only wiring remaining is to connect the tail lights I am happy with it. From what I have read most go with a 21 circuit kit. I don't think the 21 circuit kit has a dedicated cigarette lighter circuit. I don't smoke, but the old truck has a cigarette lighter.

One tip is to follow the beginning instructions, layout the harness and make certain all the wiring is bundled to route to the correct locations. I also spent a little extra and purchased crimp connectors with the heat shrink already on them so all the connectors would be sealed.

My kit was an EZwire and other than minimal instructions and no circuit diagrams I'm satisfied with it.. depending on your add-ons it can be easy or complicated. I had a 21 and had circuits left over. I did an article on mine. I'ts no way a how to.. Just pictures, thoughts and ideas.. my truck is a little more custom so if you're doing stock, your's will be a little easier.. it might keep you from making same mistakes I did.. and welcome to FTE. you've got a great project there and I bet before long a bunch of empty coffee cans. Contact Mid 50's f-100 for a catalog.. it's full of diagrams and parts you;'ll surely need and they are great folks to deal with.. http://midfifty.com.. There are several other companies that cater to our illness... LMC, Dan Carpenter... google should find what you need.

That's a pretty solid looking truck and allot better start than many begin with . I have an American Autowire kit and have looked at it intently " haven't done much with it " so I am of not much help . One common suggestions is to wire a plug into your gauge cluster " which I have done " otherwise removal is a huge PIA .

I've been looking at this kit for connectors. I didn't realize painless had something like that.

I'd like to add ac but feel that power windows / locks take away from the character of the truck. But a cigarette lighter is probably a must just so I have an easy phone charger. I'd love to go crazy on getting cool features on the truck but I'm in over my head as is. So I've adopted the KISS method. I just want it back on the road

I keep hearing about ezwire. I might have to check it out. I've never done automotive stuff before (for instance does an msd ignition wire up differently then the stock ignition? Why wasn't there a fuse box on the truck). So that's why I'm going for as idiot proof as possible. I'm not an idiot, but wisdom through a wealth of counselors if you know what I mean.
