I am wondering if I should buy a hotter TS? These are my readings at idle. I drove 25 miles to work already and sat in parking lot for a few and temps went down. They where 188 ECT. 196 eot at 70 mph
Just wondering.
Thanks Dave
I usually don't see mine below 190 ever. I would suggest a new 192F. If you go for a 200 F tstat it could push your oil into the 210-215 range which is too hot for a cruising temp. While underload you could easily see 220+
I drove 100km one way to a close town. couple of steep grades. I was unloaded and in boost the whole way maintaining 100kph and this is what I observed:
My highest temps observed at the top of a steep grade. OD with TC locked at 25 lbs of boost all the way up
ECT 200
EOT 201
Lowest temps while cruising downhill once up to temp - ambient temp 30 F
ECT 192
EOT 192
The T-stat sets the low operating temp for the engine while the PCM and sensors set the high operating temp
Look on the t-stat wax element to see the calibrated temp stamped in
Boil the t-stat on your stove, using a thermometer to check when the t-stat opens -- should be according to the stamping
Running a lower than factory temp will make the deltas seem off -- the factory temp is 192.5F
PS: Running the heater will pull the temps down some
I wouldn't worry about 188 on a stock T-stat. I went out and bought a replacement because I would see mine down as low as 186 when I thought it should be 190+ (truck fully warmed up). Turns out that they cycle a bit on the low end, or at least mine does. So it lags a bit closing down when the cooling system has plenty of thermal reserve. The more I've watched it, the more I'm convinced of this and I'll be waiting on taking out the Factory 192 until I see it really act up. For me, 188 is just fine...
Thanks guys
I think I'll just watch it and make sure it don't dip no lower. Spring and Summer will be here shortly. Florida get 🔥 Hot.
And they can fail on that side too! But that I most definitely watch that and it gets real stable under load (or high ambient temps) once it gets over 192-194...
