Rear Axle Identification

How can I tell if I have a Dana or a Ford 10.5 rear axle on my 1999 F250SD?

My repair book has different instructions for each regarding seal replacement. I suppose I will find out once I start the work, but thought I might ask here. Helps to go over the appropriate instructions before I start.

I also need to order the tool to remove the ratcheting nut. Seems like many people have found the outside diameter of the tool slightly too large and have had to dress it down with a grinder. I wonder if that's because it works fine on one of the axles, but not the other type.

Any advice? Thank-you.

Thank-you! I just went out and looked, and although my two choices appear similar, mine has 12 cover bolts, so it must be the Ford 10.5

Most F250-F350 single rear wheel trucks were the 10.5 Sterling rear.

I bought my hub nut socket from Advanced Auto Parts a couple of months ago. In stock, fit perfectly and the best price I found anywhere.
