Catalytic converter Issue/suggestion on replacement?
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and happy to be a part of it. I recently purchased my first X, gasser 6.8L v10 from out west. Only 70k miles on it. Anyway the catalytic converter is making a sound that sounds similar to a head gasket leak at about 2k rpm. I want to replace the Cat but I've been reading that some OEM cats throw codes after install and codes won't go away. Any suggestions on what Cat I should buy?
Thanks!

Reason: Clarity
I suggest walker exhaust then. Probably the closest to oem performance you can get without oe price.
Might want to figure out what caused the early demise however. Stock can easily go double that or more. It’s required by law actually. Walker will go minimally 40k mi unless something kills it. Running rich somehow will cause it to fail.

Welcome to the EX forum!
Can you describe the sound a little better? "Like a head gasket leak" doesn't really make the noise clear. To me and what I think of what a head gasket leak sounds like, I would first suspect an exhaust leak at the manifold due to broken stud(s), are you missing any of the 20 exhaust manifold studs? What leads you to believe that it's the cat making the noise? Is the entire stock exhaust system still intact?
"Sounds like a head gasket leak". There is no typical sound they make so no clue what that means.
Bang on the cat and see if it rattles, if not it's probably ok. The next step to verify would be to remove it and see if it's broken. The only sound I've heard a cat make is rattling.
Agree on the head gasket leak. They don't typically make a sound unless it is an air-cooled engine. Then they make a sound like a leaking or cracked exhaust manifold.
Magnaflow and Walker are both good aftermarket replacements that I've used. Depending on what state you live in, be sure to get a CA emissions or Federal emissions replacement. (I think I'd be fair in saying that most folks get Federal emissions units regardless)
Regarding longevity, if it's previous live(s) were spent doing a lot of cold starts and slow driving, 70,000 miles of that could add up and make a cat go bad. 70,000 miles in 15 years is only ~4,600 miles per year.
Thanks for the comments everyone. I had the headers milled and all bolts replaced with new gaskets, along with a new California emissions CAT, and new muffler. It's no longer sluggish however I'm still getting the same noise at 1800 rpm. It looks like where the Y pipe connects to the headers someone put that orange gasket maker stuff, I'm wondering if the leak is coming from there. If I can try and explain the sound, it only happens when the engine heats up, only when under load, and it sounds like a mixture of an air leak with a tin metal flapping noise lol. At this point I'm going to redo the y pipe, so there is a new connection there, if that doesn't fix it my only guess is there is still an issue at the headers.

What year is this EX? And does it have the Rams horn style Y pipe or the necked down T shaped abomination from the factory? You mentioned headers, but I am assuming factory exhaust manifolds? Under load with some RPM and a metallic flapping noise sounds like it could be a loose heat shield on the exhaust vibrating, pretty common issue that a metal screw type hose clamp can resolve. Another source of RPM related metallic harmonic vibration noise is the tin cover over the front lower bell housing, pull it off and give it a slight bend by hand and reinstall. The bend will give it enough tension to stop its vibration and noise making.
