Installing Vacuum Wiper Motor

My wiper motor was rebuilt several years ago, and I'm just now discovering that I don't quite remember how it goes back in. The space is tight under the dash as I'm sure anyone fat and old like me has experienced first hand. Having to work around the cowl vent mechanism seems to complicate matters, and it's just not pleasant trying to get the wiper linkage positioned correctly with your body all wedged-in between the seat and the dash, steering column, gear shift lever, etc. Any tips for making this task easier will be appreciated.

It seems to me that the wiper motor should be positioned with the curved part of the motor housing facing the dash as opposed to facing the fire wall. Is that correct? Are the motor and linkage properly attached to one another? The attachment involves a post and a rubber grommet sort of thing that breaks apart quite easily. Should it? Thanks.

The only tip I have is to take out the seat.

Jim, I don't have any tips for installation as I haven't taken mine out yet but I can certainly take some pictures of mine if that would help.

With the driver's side seat out, everything is MUCH easier. The wiper linkage seems to fit right in place with the curved side of the motor facing the firewall. That seems strange though because the cable for the controller then has to come in from the passenger side which requires a 180 degree bend. I think the cable may be just barely long enough to make the bend, but I didn't try hooking it up yet. Thanks everyone for weighing in.

I was busy today, but did finally get a chance to get the wiper motor and linkage mounted in the truck. It went in easily enough, but (of course) it doesn't work. The cable and controller were working fine while I was holding the motor and linkage in my hand, but once everything was in place--no go. As mentioned, the control cable needs to make a 180 degree bend and is apparently not liking it. I don't have time to mess with it just now. Also, I think I'm going to need new rubber grommets for making the connection between the linkage and the motor. It doesn't take much to cause them to separate. Does anyone know a source?

Sorry about the size of the pic. I don't know how to control that. The perspective is looking up. The curved part of the motor is basically pointing down, but it is angled somewhat toward the firewall. You can see the control cable coming in from the passenger side. There is very little slack available to help make the big bend. It would seem that the motor should be rotated 180 degrees so the control cable could come in straight from the driver's side, but I can't seem to make that work. Could the linkage be incorrectly attached to the motor? Thanks.

Jim the cable does come in from the passenger side that's the only way it can go the linkage is on the cab side facing the inside.

Jim,

Just checked my original vacuum setup. It is still connected to the arms. It is the same as you are showing.

I did have to lube it up pretty well when I was still using it.

Thanks Jim and Rick. At least now it's settled that the control cable comes in from the passenger side. My cable is original. It worked once. It should work again.

Ha ha! Famous last words!

Sorry I can't help you. Both my trucks which are no frills Standard Cabs, have the optional electric wipers. And I'm glad.

Abe, you don't know what you're missing. Nothing says 1950's technology like stepping on your gas peddle and having your wipers stop in their tracks, or coasting down a hill and having them speed up. I was just talking to a guy over the week-end only a few years a younger than me, and he said he had never driven a car with vacuum wipers. How can you properly appreciate a modern vehicle with such gaps in your experience. LOL.

My Dad's 48 3/4 ton Chevy, which I drove, had vacuum wipers and I drove several of my brothers 48-53 Chevy pickups with vacuum wipers. So I know your pain.... or joy!

I'm relieved. I was afraid you had missed something important growing up. My truck never did have working wipers, even when I drove it as a teenager. My experience with vacuum wipers comes from my Dad's cars.

Done. Thanks everyone!

The wipers sweep back and forth nicely and seem to park in the proper position, at least in the friendly confines of my garage. Results may be different in actual real world conditions. Now, if only I had a **** for the control cable. Mine is missing, and the one ordered from Mid-Fifty wasn't even close to being right.

Your panel really looks good. Nice job on the wipers. I'm so glad my 52 has electric wipers. I had a 61 Falcon in high school with vacuum wipers, not too effective.
