Mic'd the Unison Ring & Vanes for their sizes

Since i had to buy a new turbo some of the questions i got asked made me curious.. unfortunately when i thought the new vanes were smaller on the new turbo it was actually just an optical illusion it seems... but heres the mic results comparing the new parts to the old parts i have... The old Unison ring im mic'ing here was from a previous rebuild of my old turbo.. i didnt do the one that was in there when the turbine side got frozen and melted... maybe ill do that tomorrow just for fun... i was eventually able to get it off after it being frozen to the housing... Sorry for the blurriness of the pictures... i was holding the mic with one hand and taking pics with the other... my hands arent the most steady...

So we will start with the old ring and vane first...

New Turbos unison ring and vanes...

So in comparison. Old Reading.. New Reading.. all measurements are in Inches on the micrometer..
Outer Ring Dia....... 5.4855 In... 5.466. In
Inner Ring Dia....... 3.737. In.... 3.7435 In
Actuator Hole Wid.. 0.304. In.... 0.3005 In
Actuator Hole T/B.. 0.6375 In.... 0.6285 In
Vane Slot Length... 1.0305 In.... 1.0375 In
Vane Slot Width.... 0.128. In..... 0.1255 In
Vane Length......... 1.809. In..... 1.8115 In
Vane Width........... 0.479. In..... 0.4755 In (i tried to find the widest point on this set. but my difference between these 2 were probably due to them getting pot marked and melted on the old ones)

so a little neat seeing the differences between the new ring and old ring... when you look at the inner dia and outer dia of the old vs new you can see why these eventually freeze up in place... theres not alot of tolerance differences there when comparing them.. now im curious to see what the one that was in there during the melt down really looks like on the mic..

So in comparison. Old Reading.. New Reading.. Burned up turbo reading.. all measurements are in Inches on the micrometer..
Outer Ring Dia....... 5.4855 In... 5.466. In.... 5.479. In
Inner Ring Dia....... 3.737. In.... 3.7435 In.... 3.7545 In
Actuator Hole Wid.. 0.304. In.... 0.3005 In.... 0.292. In
Actuator Hole T/B.. 0.6375 In.... 0.6285 In.... 0.630. In
Vane Slot Length... 1.0305 In.... 1.0375 In.... 1.0255 In
Vane Slot Width.... 0.128. In..... 0.1255 In.... 0.127. In

so looking at the comparative readings of the old ring id replaced previously, the new turbos ring and the one i got out of the burned up turbo it appears the outer diameter of the burned up ring was between the diameters of the older ring and the new ring.. inner diameter was a little wider than both the old one and new one... actuator width got narrower... length was almost worn out to the same as the older ring... vane slot length got shorter... and the width of the vane slot almost matched the older ring...

some ways the older ring seems like it was worse off than the one that was in the turbo at the time it melted... now im curious about the housing itself... might mic both to see why it froze up so badly with the last ring... as i had to pry the ring off. but where it would have been holding onto doesnt seem like its that tight looking at the comparative numbers from the other 2 rings...

feel like im playing Turbo CSI lol
