400k Twice Tired Turbo Teardown!

so here it is... the boostless turbo...

[imghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ITXU-orrI-I/UGt34pXunYI/AAAAAAAACQg/VWEIt7YeMTo/s472/IMG_20121002_182446.jpg[/img]

and as it comes apart...

and a little surprise i found when i felt something wiggle on the tip of my pinkie while turning the thing over... you could say i pooped a little...

and back to the teardown...

so... thats the point i am at with it... if it can be further broken down so we can get a look at the innards of the center cartridge i will need instruction on how to do so without breaking anything... i would love to attempt a rebuild if its possible ...

Wow. If that's a black widow from the looks of it you it lucky. Sorry have no experience with turbos. I hope everything works out for ya though. I am sure somebody will chime in soon.

smack the shaft, at compressor side. It'll come out of the turbo bearing cup. Then, remove the cup and have a gander.

btw...what yuo planning on doing with it?

if i can rebuild it i will keep it as a spare in case motorbug needs it... or in case anyone else needs it... if i cant rebuild it... im going to do some experimenting... pulse jet powered go cart or something...

yes that was a widow... they are getting pretty bad down here since the rain...

tim, how do i get that locking ring doo hickey off the shaft on the compressor side? will it just unpress itself when i tap on the end of the shaft?

ok i got it the rest of the way apart... it was just being stubborn.

so aside from the nasty stuff on that compression ring looking thing everything looks ok to me... but maybe im missing something... should i be checking tolerances with a caliper?

if so... what are the specs on tolerance?

That is cool seeing what is inside. Especially the evidence of the air vortex inside. so no obvious reasons for the loss of boost then?

Not as of yet other than the compressor housing oring being baked.
Im a bit concerned about the charred oil buildup right at the turbine. Is that normal?

thats about it, Chris. The rebuild kits' around 65-ish. Nothing to it, really. I too, am chasing a boost loss. Have tried my rebuilt and purchased a broken one, rebuilt it, and still, the same low boost numbers. Stoked that yuor boost loss WAS that from the turbo? I'd thought with mine, the #'s would've been different with different turbos, but no.

I just rebuilt a buddys' as well, when installing the FELPRO gaskets, and his truck/#'s were great afterwards...

For your boost issues i have to say up pipes. If you have had the same results out of 2 turbos the issue has to be drive pressure. Either up pipes are leaking or you arent getting enough fuel. At least thats what logic tells me from what ive learned so far. What kinda shape are your injectors in?

How are your egt's?
Have you verified that your boost gauge is reading accurately?

Oh and to answer your question...

The turbo was the culprit. With the replacement Dwayne sent me... im seeing 25psi on my gauge now... and there is great gobs of go. My EGT's have dramatically lowered as well... i have to hold the pedal to the floor past 80 just to see above 1000*

My economy has tanked however... and imthinking it has to do with my ebpv.

Should my economy improve if i just unplug it?

Ok soijust noticed in the picture of the rebuild kit that there are 4 orings. Where do they go? There werent any when i took the turbo apart... are they just replacement turbo to pedestal, and pedestal to block orings?

if they go in the actual turbo... then thats probably part of the problem.

only o-rings i can think of, are the pedestal to turbo, motor to pedestal, and the compressor housing and spider assy o-rings.

when i had my tranny out, there was no soot anywhere on uppies. f/p isfine, 70psi on d2, 75psi on wvo. I did the 10k mod, and what you know it, my boost, with redline unhooked, went to 22psi, 16-ish with line hooked
