Glow will not go out and when I turn key to start only get clicks and other strange noises but engine does not turn over. Multimeter says 12 volts on both batteries.
I agree. If you are getting a mix between a buzz and a hum (fuel pump and glow plugs) and nothing but clicks from the engine trying to start, not turning over at all, its dead batteries.
You would be shocked to see the current draw of these engines starting - between the glow plugs and starter current its north of 200 amps. Thats why these have two batteries - to be able to supply the cranking amps.
I have replaced my batteries twice now. The first two sets were OEM Motorcraft batteries and lasted 3 years each set. The second set went out last winter. I replaced them with Optima yellow tops. I am hoping they last a bit longer. I am really crossing my fingers, though, because I have heard the newer Optimas are not built like they used to be (then again - what is these days?).
Thks for your replies. I tested the batteries again w multimeter while cranking, results were the same on both batteries, 7.5 volts!!! So it’s off to NAPA , the only parts store in town.
I’m in the mountains of New Mexico enjoying some cooler weather and rubbing it in on my friends & neighbors back home in central Texas so I guess I deserved this!
Anyway, Thks again and if new batteries don’t correct problem you will hear from me again.

Check the batteries you get. The dates on the ones I got, I forget where I got them now, were over a year old when I got them... I was in the same boat, though, dead truck and not much of a way around it so I got them anyway. I haven't had any issues yet. Just something to be aware of.
Also if you can call ahead and have them put the batteries on a charge that would be great.
You are correct, I didn’t have much choice. It’s not a desert as for as automotive services here but it’s awfully dry! I took my time replacing one battery at a time cleaning as I went. I even saved the little foam insulation around ea battery. After installation, truck started as normal and no lost settings that I know of. Now I have to return cores on Monday morning.
Just had a similar issue. Early this week the wife was driving the Lariat. She hit the switch and the starter would engage but without enough energy the starter would just disengage instead of dragging trying to crank. It did this a couple of times. I was on the road but luckily it didn't leave her stranded. I told her I would load test the batteries when I got home. But this morning it was dead. I went and picked up two new 850 CCA Motorcraft batteries and all is well.
