How low is the meter supposed to go just after starting? Normally the neddle in my truck would sit on the N for a several seconds. Now, last coulpe of day, ive noticed it sits below the N for several seconds. Is this an indication of my batteries going south? The batteries have been in the truck for 3 years and 3 months now. Think its time for a change?
I'm no expert, but it sounds normal. Don't the glow plugs continue heating for a few seconds even after the engine starts, and continue to draw quite a bit of amps? What happens after a few seconds? Does your voltage levels return to 13 -14 volts?
Inspite of whats been said about the glow plugs so far, I'd go have my batteries tested. My X started doing the same thing when the batteries started dying. But the glow plugs are indeed whats causing the load on your batteries. Don't wait too long to have them tested though. If do they end up dying on you, having to jump two batteries isn't the least bit fun. It almost took cars to get mine started. Even when you jump it and get it started, when you turn it off and have to restart later on don't wait for the glow plugs. Just turn the key and go, the plugs will suck whatever power you have out.
I know what you are talking about, mine has started dipping lower and lower, we are back into the warmer season, so I am hoping I can wait until fall before I need to replace mine, still originals OEMs 99 350. keep my fingers crossed.
I would service your batteries if you haven't already done that! I have 89000 on the original batteries, I believe that anything below 8 volts while trying to crank is a battery that is going south. I would replace both at same time if and when you need a battery.
