Spring, washer, & disc fell out when oil filter was removed.
1997 F-250. Apparently an early style oil filter housing, later ones supposedly use a snap ring instead of peening to retain it. I'm posting this for the next guy because I had a heck of a time figuring it out. When I took the filter off a spring, washer, and flat disc fell out. It's the oil filter bypass valve. The fix: insert spring, then flat disc, then washer. Hold in place and re-peen the housing all around the washer with a center punch so it doesn't fall out again.
When I was searching it was hard to find the info as to which parts went in and in what order. And there was plenty of false info to weed through. Tho the assembly is fairly simple and logical, I had other stuff in my drain pan from previous work so I wasn't sure which parts actually came out of this truck. I also read several posts saying that the whole thing would have to come off the truck to get the valve back in, many recommended just replacing the whole assembly and made it sound like an impossible task to fix, it's really not that bad. It was a little bit fumbly doing it under the truck, but MUCH less work than removing the whole damn thing. I pushed everything in using a socket of the right diameter to get the washer past the peening and it stayed in place, but barely. When I went to peen it everything shot out. Holding the valve & punch while swinging a hammer was quite difficult so I lightly peened it, then put the parts back in, then peened the heck out of it so it doesn't fall out again. It originally had just 4 light dimples, one so far from the hole it probably wasn't doing anything. I'm sure my peening was overkill, but I wanna make sure it lasts. Had he gone to a shop for the oil change it coulda been ugly. They might have left it out, sold him a whole new cooler, who knows.
Oh, and something else I read was "just leave it out, it'll run fine". While it's true that it'll run perfectly fine, the oil is going to be constantly by-passing the filter so eventually there will be damage caused.
