Howdy all, i've been in and out of FTE for many years. I was very active years ago with a 67/69 project. I just bought a 1996 F150 regular cab longbed. Straight 6 and automatic. It's a very basic XL.
i have yet to pick it up. I can't determine online what gear ratio it is, using the VIN. Guess I need an axle code from the door tag. I had a 95 XL back in college with the straight 6. so, i'm somewhat familiar with these trucks.
it will be used as backup vehicle for the family when other vehicles need to be worked on. and it will be used occasionally to haul a golf cart. at worst, golf cart+ trailer+ junk would weigh less about 3000lbs, probably less. I'm guessing this truck will tow that easily, regardless of the gears??
this truck has just under 40,000 miles, so i'm hoping for another 200,000, based on what i know about these straight 6 trucks
anything i should be aware of for these trucks as they hit the 20+ year mark? wow, i'm getting old

For the most part this combination of engine and gearing has a tow rating of Zero (0) to the best of my knowledge and previous posts on this forum. Maybe it was 2.73 that was the worst offender....
according to that VIN it's a 2.73 rear axle.
rust points are rear leaf spring hangers and rad support, but if it's a texas truck rust is probably not an issue.
the computer can develop a problem with leaking capacitors.
thanks for the detail. 3.08:1 would be a disappointment and a surprise with the straight 6 engine. i'll know more this weekend.
i may also see if I can get the cart in the longbed without a trailer. our golf cart is a 6 seater, about 9' from front bumper to middle of the rear axle. it might fit with the tailgate down.. cart weighs about 1000lbs

The data I posted came directly from Ford, but always wise to verify what the door jamb tag has. Even without the notion of towing anything I would suggest 3.,55 gears with stock tires.
I think 300-E4OD-3.08 gears is rated about 4400 lbs towing, according to the owner's manual available at the Motorcraft site. Better gears get higher ratings.
