Hello, I am new to the 6.0L, and could use some help. I have quite a bit of experience with the 7.3l and auto repair in general. My buddy has a 2003 F350 with the 6.0 and has come up with some issues and needs his truck for work so i am trying to help him. It started by switching to a high idle when parked after it ran for a minute. Today it was very hard to start and it seemed like the ICP pressure and desired pressure were set at around 1440 from crank and during idle? My 7.3L starts at 500 so it seemed odd. Check engine light was also on. Today i brought over my AE and pulled a P228? ICP code. I also tried to get a look at the ICP but i was amazed at how far they had that thing jammed up there, what were they thinking. From underneath it looks like there may be some oil on the block up there. Am i on the right track to think that the ICP sensor is shot? What is the best way to attack it and where is the best place to get one? Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help.
Yes, the early builds are a bugger to get at the ICP, heat shield has to come off along with a socket cut down to the correct length to get over the sensor itself in order to get a ratchet on it(unless you do it like DTR does in his video). They are known to leak, will also need a pigtail since it's likely oil soaked.
You can update them to the newer style, I did a few months ago when the kids failed again with a whopping 25k miles on it.(OEM Motorcraft)
Unplug it and see how it runs. The high idle is actually a normal thing in colder weather depending on what the ambient temps are.
Here is a good video on ICP's, early build in particular, that shows the newer style sensor as well.
Autonation out of White Bear Lake or ficmrepair.com are about the best bet for prices. Don't get aftermarket unless you want to do the job twice.
