4R70W Transmission Question
Good evening all! I need some advice with my 2003 F150 FX4 Supercrew. I have the 5.4l Triton with the 4R70W transmission. The truck has about 196000 miles on it, and I am certain it is all original.
Today on the way home from work the Overdrive light on the shifter started flashing and the truck started shifting strangely between the 2-3 gears and the 3-4 gears. I also noticed a whining noise which sounded like the transmission pump maybe. I limped the truck home and pulled the transmission codes and pulled a P0712 code.
The research I have done indicates that this is a transmission fluid temperature sensor issue. I found the part for $48, but I want to get some advice on this before proceeding.
The truck and transmission have never given me any issues prior to this. Should I proceed with replacing the sensor or go ahead and rebuild the transmission? What would you do in this situation?
Thanks in advance!

I certainly wouldn't rebuild the transmission. If you don't fix the temp sensor problem the rebuilt trans will have the same issue. Most likely there isn't anything wrong with the transmission.
The problem is either a bad temp sensor or a damaged or corroded wire between the PCM and the sensor.

Ok guys.... this evening was the moment of truth! I got home from work and the bulkhead harness with the built in TFT sensor had arrived. I quickly dropped the pan since I was anxious to see what was in there.
To my surprise, it was not as bad as I thought. There were a few metal shavings, but I figure that is to be expected for a truck with 196000 miles on it.
I swapped the harness, reset the PCM, and installed a new filter before replacing the pan. I then added 5 quarts of Mercon V and started it up. It shifts great and runs great just like it should! I think it even shifts a little better than before the sensor failed. All in all, not a difficult job and cost a total of about $100 for the harness (sensor included), filter, and fluid.
Thanks for the help guys!
