I decided to add a Napa Gold Wix Filter/Water Separator inline between my ATTA 68 Gal diesel auxiliary fuel tank and the factory tank. When speaking to the guys from ATTA they recommended that the filter be placed between the tank and the electric fuel pump that the Freedom Fill system uses, but when having the tank and system installed at a local commercial Ford truck service dept. the technician which has done 100's of aux tanks recommended that the new filter be placed after the electronic fuel pump. Looking for opinions on the plus and minuses of both methods. The system from ATTA did not come with nor require the filter, I wanted it as a precautionary measure even though my last setup never had any issues without the filter/separator on my previous truck. The filter handles way more flow than the pump creates so that should only be an issue if the filter was extremely dirty. When researching online I see people advocating both ways, just wondering if anyone in this forum had any first hand knowledge.
on my 2004 (atta tank & freedom fill) I installed the filter/water separator PRE aux pump....I figured I MIGHT be able to extend the pump life if I was filtering fuel before it got to the pump.
the pump is now 10+ years old and almost every gallon I ever ran thru the truck went into the ATTA tank first....the pump still works fine.
I could tell when the filter was getting full, by the speed (and sound) of the pump.
The NAPA filters are better and cheaper than the ford filters - so I figured I was also extending the life and change interval of the ford filters too.
