I currently have outdoor and hiking equipment that I keep on the floor of my back seat. Several rucks worth of gear.
I was considering a rolling bed cover rather than a tool box. Then I would plastic containerize the gear and store it in the back with a bed board retaining it against the cab.
Then I asked myself why I wasn't just going to install a tool box.
Both! I had a crossbed toolbox on my 2012 SRW, I always wanted a bed cover so when I got the DRW thats what I did, I went with the ReTrax and one weekend got creative and hacked that crossbed box up to fit down inside the bed, now I’m planning on putting an onboard air setup in the dead space under the bed cover coil for airbags, a train horn and some extra connections for filling tires
I've had numerous cross bed boxes. They can hold a lot, but I needed the rail clearance for a 5th wheel. Sold big Weatherguard 27" box, almost bought a tonneau, but hated the backrack squeaking with the tonneau brackets. So I bought an in bed chest box. Had a baby and need more storage now, sold backrack and tonneau shopping. Going to buy the Truxedo Deuce that can either roll up, or just flip the front open for box access.
I've had about every option. LOL. I think this will work the best for now.
there is no prefect option, sand i think it depends on what you haul and how often
i have evolved to having an over the rail gull wing box with a power roll up bed cover.
my favorite set up so far and have had many
i like the gull wing cause u can get in things out of it from the side with out getting in the truck. Keep tool bag, jump box, hitch stinger, tire chains, gas can, tow strap tie down and tarps in it. also have shallow one so still can slide long things under in when need 8 ft.
i like the cover cause can haul most of my loads in it closed and don't have to worry about getting them wet (NW) or blowing out and can leave things in there over night with less chance of theft. Box for roll up also is similar depth to tool box so long boards and things also can slide under it.
i think in bed box's shorten the bed to much. Had regular roll up and folding covers and the power one is just cool and looks best to me as it is flush with bed rails
i think it boils down to what u haul and how often. i have found when have larger long items i just leave tail gate open to add space that is taken up by the tool box and roll up box. I also like getting most things home dry with the cover closed
