Any way to find numbers on this engine to figure out what it is? Intake is a performer 390 so I know it is an FE, but how to tell what year and displacement? I know zip about Ford engines, just picked up another project truck and going to ID what I have here. Trans will be next to ID.
Thanks!

FE engines are Y blocks, but most people either don't know this or don't call them that. 1954/64 Y blocks have the dizzy behind the carb. FE's have the dizzy in front of the carb.
Look on the block for the casting number and date code, once these are known, this will pin the engine down to one or two years. But it will not ID the size of the engine.
1958/64 FE engines were only installed in cars, have rounded valve covers without holes for smog valve/oil cap. There is an engine oil fill tube at the right front.
When people attempt to install these engines in 1965/76 F100/350's, they discover that the bolt pattern on the block is different where the rubber insulators bolt on, so they have to fabricate brackets.
1965/76 FE engines have pent roof shaped valve covers with holes for smog valve (right side) and oil cap (left side).
1965/71 Passenger Car & 1965/76 F100/350 use the same bolt pattern for the rubber insulators.
1958/67 352: Bore: 4.00" .. Stroke: 3.50."
1968/76 360 (F100/350 only) & 390 (1965/71 cars & 1968/76 F100/350) use the same block and heads, the bore is the same (4.05"), the stroke is different.
Measure the stroke to determine engine size. 360 = 3.50" .. 390 = 3.78."
Some FE engines have 352 cast on the block, but this is a foundry mark only. It is not the size of the engine! The cast 352 was replaced by a cast reversed 105 circa 1971.
Note: On sale day, 352/360's magically become 390's!
Numbers on the side of the block are D4TE, searches made it sound like that narrowed it down to a 360 or 390, then other sites list multiple displacements...so looks like that did not narrow it down much. I will look for more numbers once it is out, then it gets thrown up for sale.
It's easy to measure the stroke thru a spark plug hole....I use a piece of stiff wire.
If it was closer I'd buy it.
If you part it out, I'd be interested in the intake manifold.
