Anyone have any luck using one of those hidden radio antenna that you can mount under the dash and power it with 12 volts? Dont really want to drill 2 holes in the side of the cab for the dual mount one.
I have this one in both projects but mounted to the inside on top of the windshield , bought them from Horton's in Milton. Seeing as you live in Guelph you would get an abundant amount of stations compared to where I live in northwestern Ontario. My sister lives in Guelph and I'm from Toronto..
I mounted a normal type of antenna under the fiberglass running boards on my 53, mounted it in rubber. It works good for FM, not much for AM. I have one of the hidden ones under the rear deck of my 40 Ford coupe and it is pretty much the same except no AM reception.
If you have to have an antenna there are also glass mounted versions.
But consider that if you have a smartphone you can usually stream music, news, weather, etc. (far more choices than you have on your broadcast radio stations) anywhere there is wifi or cell service. If there is no cell service just switch to your downloaded music. All you need is a bluetooth receiver in your truck. No antenna needed.
You can hide the small bluetooth device behind the dash and use a blank on the dash or they make them to look like stock vintage radios. The selections are plentiful in all price ranges. Just Google "vintage truck radios bluetooth".

I installed one in my truck and it seems to work fine. I used a RetroSound radio that was mounted behind the seat (with only the controls on the dash) and mounted the hidden antenna on the back wall.
Hum, I'm just started thinking about this for my build. Who needs a radio these days? A good bluetooth speaker and play songs from Pandora/Spotify/Amazon off of your phone to it. You can even play FM radio stations from your phone if you want commercials.
Maybe wire the speaker to a charger so you don't have to bring it inside to charge.

Just my 2 cents

I had thought about going that route myself with my own twist to it. I took an old speaker I had from a Drive In Theater and removed the speaker from the housing and mounted a JBL blue tooth speaker in its place. It works OK but when I went to finish my truck I had a hole in my dash that the previous owner had cut to mount a radio so I went ahead and put in a blue tooth capable radio instead.
My blue tooth speaker
How I mounted the JBL Blue Tooth speaker inside the housing.
