F4 Cooling

Few questions:

Are the radiators for 6 and 8 cylinder the same? I can't seem to find a 226 specific radiator.

How do you remove the thermostat from the housing? Mine seems pretty damn solid..

Radiators are different. V8 has two inlets and two outlets. Radiator for the six has one in and one out. Be extremely careful of that thermostat housing. They are impossible to find. Soak it.

How does the thermostat separate from the housing? What's holding it in?

Is this a 6 cylinder rad then?

The thermostat is not held in by anything other than the gasket and perhaps some rust or corrosion. The radiator shown appears to be a driver side outlet where your 226 CID six should be passenger side outlet. The top inlet pipe on my six was centered in the radiator.

Ray is spot on about the thermostat and housing. The housings are prone to cracking at the mounting ears, are not reproduced, and need a completely flat sealing surface when reinstalled.

I was being too gentle with it. Took a flathead and some prying but it popped out fairly quickly. Thanks!

Where do I find a 180 T-Stat for these? Called a few auto parts stores and none seem to be able to search back to 1950. Is it a common part that I can pull from other models or is it super specific?

1950 226.

Carry the old T stat to a good parts house and let the old guy behind the counter find you one.
