4R100 temps for 2004 Navigator

Hi all,

We are planning to get a travel trailer in the 7-7.5klb range and tow with our 04 4x4 Navigator.

I was able to find the PID for trans temp in Forscan since the IP is rather lacking in instrumentation.

Problem is I don't know what the safe operating range of the 4R100 is? I know this trans has a poor reputation with the 7.3, but I'm guessing it's plenty adequate for a Navi towing 7-8k. Anything to be concerned about there?

You can go as high as 220°F all day long with no problem. You can go as high as 250°F for no more than a half hour at a time. If it gets that hot, idle or fast idle in park or neutral until the temp comes down. Do NOT shut the engine off with the trans really hot! That will trap the heat in the trans and cook it.
