1948 Ford Master Cylinder

I am rebuilding my 1948 Ford F1 master cylinder and came upon a question.

1. My original had a big metal "washer" and my rebuild kit came with a rubber washer? Are these both used or just the metal or just the rubber washer?
2. what is the purpose of that wire clip? I know the boot goes over the rod, but then does the clip just go in there to spread the boot?

and yes... I have a manual!!! lol

I don't see a new primary cup in that kit? or is that what you're calling the "big rubber washer"? A part like the steel washer that doesn't wear out isn't always included in kits.

The clip prevents the whole works from shooting out the front of the M/C, it goes into a groove in the bore.

I already have the holed disk, spring, and the cup that goes over the spring inside the unit.

So all of this is pushed down into the master cylinder and held there with the spring? Does the black washer in the pic supposed to replace that stop washer?

Held there with the spring clip. The spring is trying to push it all out the end.

I would guess the rubber washer is inside of the steel washer, so the piston isn't metal-to-metal against the steel washer.

the rubber washer isn't as big or as rigid as the as the retainer washer. also this was an LMC purchase so you never know what they send just to incorporate other years, so this is throwing me.

I just bought a NAPA rebuild kit and looked at it. It also has the rubber washer with a hexagonal hole in the middle. It's a little smaller than the piston, but not much. I wonder if it's to keep the pushrod from rattling against the steel washer? No instructions, unfortunately.

Just to be clear, you install both the steel and the rubber washer, with the steel to the outside and then the clip.

Doesn't the rubber washer go into the bore first under the RPV then the spring, the cup and then the piston? It has been a while since I've been into one of those.

I searched back thru old threads on the subject and found the exact same discussion several times! Sadly, people solved the problem but didn't show how, or forgot how they did it.

It was mentioned that the rebuild kits include parts for later models that aren't needed with early MC's. The "grommet" looking rubber washer is mentioned several times. I'll keep looking...

One of those guys might have been me. The exploded diagram I got with my rebuild kit and the shop manual diagram were different and I wasn't sure where the extra part went. I tried one way and the MC leaked when bench tested, so I put it in the other way and it worked. And I am sorry I do not remember which way was right.

looks to me that the rubber washer with the hex in the middle goes where part number 2169 goes. if it were me i'd assemble it in this order. aluminum plunger then rubber washer then washer then the clip to hold it all in. also lube up the rubber and the bore with brake fluid. then bench test it before installing it.
