need help with master cylinder

Here is my status in my master cylinder rebuild on my '54 F-100.

I have honed The cylinder. I think I got the rough spots smoothed out. I know when you take something apart you should remember the order you took them out. But I had the shop manual diagram and the spring pushed the stuff out when I took it apart.

Question: the shop manual these parts in this order: the spring and valve, cup, piston, stop plate, snap ring and the boot. The rebuild kit has all those pieces but it also has a thin spring washer and a thick rubber washer or grommet. These two pieces also came out of my master cylinder. Where do these 2 pieces fit in?

You didn't see these extra parts when you dis-assembled the master cylinder, and now you are wondering where the extra parts from the kit go.

The question is: What other master cylinders does the overhaul kit you bought fit besides 1954 F100's?

The master cylinder is the same 1953/56 F100 (B3C2140A), but if you bought a universal overhaul kit, it may have parts that not only fit this master, but extra parts for other's like F2's, F3's, etc.

I've run into this before on the 1960's stuff.

It is hard to know without seeing the parts but I would say from your description that the rubber washer goes in first and the valve seats on it. The wave washer likely goes between the cup and the piston.

Here is a drawing of the Master cylinder you should be working on. I hope it helps:

Name: Copy of Ford Truck Master Cylinders.jpg
Views: 11324
Size: 61.0 KB

One other thing that came to mind last night is that I recall having this discussion about 9 months ago with another member. I believe that the drawings (including the one I provided) are a little misleading in that the "Valve Assembly" #2178, is actually two or three pieces, not just one. And I think that is where your extra parts came from (and the new extra parts go).

I found it and here is the link...too bad the pictures didn't survive. I'll try to find them again and if I do I can repost it for you.

Thanks for all the help: Number, The 2 parts in question did come out of my master cylinder and they are in the rebuild kit, but not listed on the shop manual pics.

Julie, I studied the old thread and it looks like that guy had the same question
about those 2 parts. I looked at that thread quickly and I think it will help me.

This story reminds me of my Panel Trucks Carb. Took it apart for rebuild, let it sit for a year, then got back to it only to realize I forgot what went where and how. I put it back together, but I still to this day have the funny feeling that something is not correct. I don't have a running engine to test it out on either(except my newly rebuilt engine).

I take it from the "rebuild kit", you can't just buy new master cylinders, correct?

Yes, you can. NAPA has them for $120. but I thought I could rebuild it myself, have the satisfaction of doing it myself, and saving some money.

It's really too bad that th epicture on that link didn't survive all the site upgrades and stuff. As I recall it was a picture of mine with all th eparts laid out - including the extra ones. I looked and can't seem to find it on any of my discs....sorry.

Update: I got the master cylinder together and put on the truck and hooked up the lines. I tried to bleed it and very little fluid came out. A friend with a vacuum pump tried to bleed them and couldn't. We removed the brake lines at the master cylinder and pumped the brakes and no fluid came out.

I took the master cyl. off and made sure the 3 outlets were open. I took the valve off and pushed on the cyl as if pumping the brake and just a little bit of fluid trickled out. So the problem was not clogged up outlets.

So I took the cyl apart again and will try another position for the 2 phantom parts. I put the thin brass washer between 2173 (cup) and 2169 (valve). On my old thin brass washer I could see marks were the the little holes from the valve were. So I am sure that is correct. I put the thick rubber washer between 2169 (valve) and 2188 (stop plate) thinking it served as a cushion for the returning parts after the brake pedal was released. Someone on that other thread said the rubber washer went in first. What do you think?

Was this my problem? the valve was not positioned correctly to permit fluid get into the cyl so it can be pushed out to the outlets???

I will try again Sat. AM and hopefully you guys and gals can give me some advise...

thanks!!

The thick rubber washer is not letting the piston come back far enough. It is the first thing that goes in the cylinder when assembling things. It will be between 2178 and the end of the bore.
You have the thin washer in the right place.

I got the master cylinder rebuilt. Put the thick rubber washer in first, bench tested it and it squirted fluid out the outlets real good. Put it on the truck and when I pumped the brake it got firmer. Bled each wheel and it works fine.... So far so good, hope it continues to work fine.

A friend said I should get a later model master cylinder that has 2 reservoirs. What year Ford master cylinder would fit under the floor? How much work would be involved for that change? And would I then be skipping down the Darkside path???

Took the truck out for a drive today. It brakes well, with a good firm pedal. So far, no leaks from the master cylinder.

Thanks to all that provided help!
