Hi guys, I have a 2011 job 1 with 120k miles and It feels like the mysterious spring that helps make the tailgate lighter has sprung or is otherwise not helping. Anyone have any experience with this issue?

 

You may have a broken torsion rod that is used for the lift assist.

How do you know if the torsion rod is broken, can it be checked without removing it..?

My tailgate with the man step and stripper pole has felt very heavy since it was new. Nothing like the GM's with tailgate lift assist that almost close themselves.

 

X2. I swear that my 2011 with same step pole was much lighter.

 

I now they are lighter than the fords, but I know mine is a LOT heavier now than before.

I too want to know if this can be checked short of full removal.

 

Just strokin was right, pulled the rod out and it is fact rusted and broken. Off to find a new one.

 

Didn't even know it had one. I had the small strut shock on mine when I got it but it kept coming unhooked from the cable mount end so I just took it off and chucked it.

 

I wasn't happy with mine either PlayersZ28... I left it on my 2011 when I traded it in and decided to not get one for the 2015 because of it. If there was a way to get a stronger torsion spring/bar setup that goes inside the tailgate, I would consider that.

 

I looked at my torsion bar this weekend it was good order. It still a heavy tail gate compared to other trucks. Was hoping ford made a heavy duty one. Maybe it because the step and the striper pole that makes it heavier.

 

I am sure that the step and stripper pole (I guess the stripper is sold separately) make the tailgate heavier than one without it.

 

I witnessed mine breaking. I was in the bed, and then I heard what sounded like a gun shot, when I went to close the tailgate, i quickly realized what had happened
