I have a Ford F250 with 6.2 liter engine on order. I was dismayed to learn from my sales representative that all F250s will come with "50 state emissions". In my experience, the vehicles that I have driven with California emissions have less power and lower fuel economy compared with non-California models. I live in Wyoming so I'd like to avoid California emissions. Is there a way to get a new truck without the 50 state emissions?
I thought for at least the last 10 years or so all vehicles were 50 state legal. Earlier than that there were some differences but not as much recently.
Heavy trucks are exempt from those standards in Cali.
If the laws applied to SD's and other heavy trucks, then California would not have any construction vehicles in the state.
When I ordered my 2016 Ford F150 I was given the choice of "California/50 state" emissions or "Federal" emissions. I chose Federal emissions and the dealer confirmed that the truck did not have California/50 state emissions when I picked the vehicle up in July. I also had a 2016 Ford F250 6.2 Liter on order and when I placed my order I was also given the choice of selecting "California/50 state" emissions or "Federal" emissions. I ended up canceling the 2016 F250 because I thought it would be worth the wait for the improved 2017 F250. So, it seems there was a difference up to the 2017 model year on these trucks.
