What is the best way check fuel pressure on a 4.9l with a single tank? I have a rough idle and have ruled out the ignition system and vacuum leaks. Next is fuel pressure. My truck runs very bad if i run it hard, turn it off for ten minutes or so, then turn it on again. Almost like it is running on 3 cylinders, and the more gas i give it the worse it sounds. I suspect that is aslo the fuel pump cuz i have replaced fuel filter. I have also listened to the injectors and they sounded good to me lol.
Hook a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail. Ground pin #6 of the self-test plug. Turn on the key.
Read the pressure on the gauge. Should be about 60psi.

How do you hook it up to the fuel rail? I was told that there isnt a schrader valve or anything. And 60psi? I thought is was about 32psi or something?
This era of Ford trucks has a schrader valve on the fuel rail. The V8s and early 4.9 trucks run 32-40 PSI (32 idle, 40 WOT), while a later 4.9 like yours runs ~50-60 PSI.

Wow i didnt know that lol thanks. Do you know where the shrader valve is located and what size it is?

So the shrader valve is located on the fuel rail towards the back of the engine?
