I'm trying to decipher the correct rear axle year range for a swap into my 50' F1.
Previous post indicate the 57-72 F-100 axles are a direct swap (64 1/4" flange to flange).
Some I have looked at have a shock mount welded to the tubes. (67-72?)
What is the year range that the shock mount was part of the lower u-bolt plate?
You may have to cut the mounts off the axle you end up using and find or make some to work with your truck.
I swapped in a Dana 60. It was a bolt in deal except shock mounts and shortening drive shaft. I had to cut the mounts that were on the Dana and use the spring clamp type that was originally on the truck.
I'm sure someone that has done the 9 inch will chime in. Good luck with your swap.
By the way, there is a set of the lower spring plate mounts in the for sale section above.
I used a 71 9". It takes no more than 10 minutes to grind the welds on the shock mounts, and relocate them or toss them. I'd rather get the newest axle, rather than buy a really old one just for shock mounts.
Thanks y'all'
I agree Ross the more I read not only the newest but the later F-100 housings were built stronger.
Another interesting journey. Ford built a lot of different 9" combinations based on vehicle weight and duty.
There are several good websites with plenty of information, here is one if you're interested in knowing more. Ford 9-Inch Axles
I got lucky and found a 9 inch housing from a local bone yard........ I believe it's from a 64 f100 and the shock mounts matched without any modifications.
