shock mounts '53 vs. '65

I put in the 3.25 rear end out of a 1965 F100 into my 1953 F100 and it went very smoothly. The old lower shock mounting plate wouldn't fit the larger '65 axle, so I can't use that as a lower shock mounting point. I ended up using all the hardware from the '65 to bolt the axle up to the leaf springs and that worked great. The '65 axle has its lower shock mounting point welded onto the axle facing forward. The old '53 shock mounts were behind the axle on a plate that used to be under the axle, so I can't use the existing '53 upper shock mount (behind the axle) and the '65 lower shock mount (above the axle).

Anybody got a solution to this? The '65 lower mount seems better, should I build an upper mount by bolting in a sturdy angle iron across the chassis and welding on some upper brackets?

Or is there a simple way?

Anybody need a recently cleaned and painted '53 rear end with 3.92 gearing?

Scott, I recently did almost the same thing on my 1955. The 9" rear end I used came with a lower shock mount and saddle type bracket similar to the original style, so that took care of the lower end mounting. The upper shock mounts were the threaded studs that were mounted to a 'C' shape steel channel that went from one side of the frame to the other side of the frame. If you don't have that crossmember on a 1953, you could find a used one, or if you have a good shop, you could fabricate one. I relocated the crossmember to clear the rear mounted gas tank, and like you said the new shock mounts point foreward now. I can get a picture if you need one.
