1956 High mount pump pulley
1956 High mount pump pulley
Howdy all,
I recently bought a water pump for my 292 in the F-600.
I needed a "high mount" pump since the original 239 used one and the fan wouldn't align with my fan shroud otherwise. So I got the high mount pump.
Now I've discovered that I have no pulley to go on the pump since the original 239 water pump used a press-on pulley and the water pump shaft was shorter. The 56 water high mount pump uses a bolt on pulley.
I'm also probably not going to use the original fan. I'll probably get a couple of pillow blocks and a shaft and put a pulley and clutch fan on it.
I will need an original water pump pulley though....Anyone have one of those pulleys for a 56 high mount pump??
Thanks,
Rick

my buddy norm has the 272 out of the f-600 of 56 vintage i had . let me ask him if he wants to part with it . he prolly wont mess with the pulley so it's liable to be the whole thing if he does . bet back to ya in a while .
Hey thanks.
I have a complete (usable condx) high mount pump/pulley, fan/pulley for a 239, but the 239 pump is quite different from the 272/292 pump (because the timing cover is completely different from the 239 to the 272)
. I suppose I could have used the 239 timing cover but it went with the 239 I sold a couple years back. Anyone with a 239 would need this type of pump if they were going to mount the fan above the pump.
Now all I need is the pulley that goes on the 56 272 high mount water pump. I going to use a couple of pillow blocks and a steel shaft to hold the fan/clutch.
Most people that get an engine out of big truck and use it in an F100/250/350 don't need the high mount pump or need to mount the fan up high.

The C Series tilt cabs use a different waterpump: B7T8501A
IMO, you'll need a C Series waterpump pulley:
B7T8509B / Single sheeve / 2" depth / 6.36" in diameter.
GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has one = 800-543-4959.
MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghamton NY has one = 800-546-7278.
MCDONALD'S OBSOLETE PARTS in Rockport IN has one = 812-359-4965.
ND, Not ALL F series used the same pump, this is where rick is having the issue with his truck.
For F100- F600 trucks that have the medium duty 272 your number is correct as the fan mounts to the water pump.
F600's and up that use the 272 heavy duty engines use a complete different water pump and fan set up.
Heavy duty water pump part number is B6T-8501-B
Pulley for the above pump B5A-8512-B 6.82"OD .50" sheave width
Info out of the 1956 "big Job" chassis parts catalog
Rick, I have one if you still cant find one, PM me if you still need it

The 292 was only available in passenger cars in 1956, no truck used this engine.
Which waterpump did the OP buy? The B6T pump only used in 1956, or the B7T pump used on 1957 and later 292 C Series Tilt Cabs?

272 292 312 it makes no difference, he needs the pulley for what a F600 heavy duty came with. I can only assume he has the 56 272 water pump, going on a 292 engine, wanting to retain the 56 heavy duty style, Thats how I read into it.
All the 1957 and later F Series trucks with 272's ('57/58) or 292's ('57/63) use the B6C waterpump.
Hi guys.....back from my wonderful trip (work!
!)
Thanks for this discussion.....It's an engine out of a 1959 F-100.
I got the water pump from Rock Auto..... A1 Cardone 58233

Rock Auto claims the following applications
<table id="buyersguidetable"><tbody><tr class="part0"><td>FORD</td><td>COURIER SEDAN DELIVERY</td><td>1956</td></tr><tr class="part1"><td>FORD</td><td>F SERIES</td><td>(1955 - 1956)</td></tr></tbody></table>
I guess I'll have to find a pulley by experiment. I probably won't use the factory bearing/fan mount though since it probably won't be strong enough to support the mass and weight of a viscous clutch/fan.
I also did find a double sheave crankshaft damper from Green Sales Thanks to Bill, ( Numberdummy), They listed that they had 4. When I finally called them they had 1.
Those are getting pretty scarce. The Damper Doctor told me that they are fairly hard and getting progressively harder to find.
Thanks also to John, (Hotwrench), I now have a complete power steering pump, correct bracket, and additional pulley for the double sheave pulley on the crankshaft.....
I'm on the road to power steering!!
This truck is really a work in progress but thanks to some rather "key" people on this board, it's a lot easier to put it all together than it could be!
I'm not sure now which water pump pulley I'll need if there's more than one for that pump.
Once I get the crankshaft damper on, I'll do some precise measurements on what is needed. other than the waterpump shaft dia, is the offset the same?
thanks again to all,
Rick

A REAL truck!
"Rock Auto claims the following applications."
Uh huh...
That is not what the car and truck parts catalogs list.
A Y block 1956 Courier is not gonna be any different than any other 1956 passenger car.
All a Courier is, is a panel truck made from a 2 door station wagon with blanked out windows and no rear seats.
ALL 1955/62 Y blocks (272/292/312) used in passenger cars (and 1955/57 Birds) use the same waterpump: B6A-8501-B.
This is not the same waterpump used in Y block (272/292) 1957/64 F Series trucks, which is B6C-8501-B.
1956 F Series trucks (except with the H/D 272 engine), also use the B6C pump.

I was under the impression that the high-mount style pump was used in trucks only
Yeah....it actually looks worse than when you saw it.....little pieces laying about!! The picture above is an older picture of when I actually was able to drive it!!
