I asked this on Fordbarn and got sources for kits. Looking for electric wipers for my 40 panel. I appreciate the responses I got but it's for kits that cost $400. It is more my style (and budget) to make something work that costs much less. So my question here is more to find out if any of you have scavenged parts from some unrelated vehicle and made them work. Thanks.
You might look around for Bosch wiper motors. We used to use them on Divco milk trucks back in the day when I worked in the shop at a dairy. They are single speed shaft mount. Use just one on the drivers side or drill a hole on the passenger side if you want 2. The early Jeep guys use similar ones as well and the units aren't that pricey if I recall. I've got a pair of the Bosch units somewhere on the shelf. PM me if you want photos.
On my '59 I happened to be following a backhoe one day and noticed the single wiper had the back and forth swing like a vacuum motor. I looked it up and ordered a generic one for equipment (boats too). It was about 90 bucks, available in different degrees of arc. I made a plate to mount it to the vaccuum motor's bracketry and replaced the knurled end of the shaft that would have held the wiper arm and replaced it with the vacuum motor's lever which tied it into the factory linkage. Works perfectly. A week later I dragged home a '60 parts truck and of course it had the complete electric set up.... Oh well.
Photos attached of the Bosch 12v wipers I referred to as well as another unit I believe came from a Jeep top windshield mount based on the on/off switch.
Thanks guys. Today I was visiting with my neighbor who has a 47 and he tried to take his vacuum motor apart and get it working, unsuccessfully. That got me to thinking I wonder how good vacuum wipers would work. The diesel will have a vacuum pump so no dead spot when you floor it. Are there rebuild kits for those?
I have seen rebuilt vacuum wipers on a 50 sedan that really worked. That car also had the dual action vacuum boost fuel pump. I think a vacuum pump plus the rebuilt vacuum motor would work well for you too.
I sent my vacuum wiper motor to Clean Sweep (Kent Jaquith) in Oregon for an overhaul. The wiper worked like a champ when we test ran the motor, but then there was no load on it. Hopefully the wiper and a good coat of RainX will get us thru the occasional shower.
Similar units on old landcruisers if you know where one is. On those, each wiper did it's own thing, but they were short and never hit each other. The 90 dollar ones were available in 3 different degrees of arc and they self park too.
