Thinking of buying a 2010 F-150...

5.4L engine, Platinum trim, trailer tow package, 40k miles. It appears to be as fully loaded as they come, but I know a little less about F-150 options than I do the Super Duty. Anything I should be looking for/inspecting on this truck?

WOW! 84 views and no comments.

The 2010 F-150's were solid with the 5.4L engine. In 2010 Ford increased the size of the brakes, added electric cooling fans and refreshed the transmission software to make it shift smoother. 40K on a 2010 truck is a great find, get it before it's gone!

That's pretty much what I have, only a loaded up Lariat instead of a Plat.

The only thing I have had to do is fix the transmission leak on the pass through bulkhead connector. There was a TSB for it but I had to pay for it. That was at about 125k miles.

Personally I think the one year difference to an 11 to get the 5.0 is worth it, but others may not see it that way. I had a 5.4 2v (and the 3v in the 2010 will be more powerful), and it was a good steady slow workhorse. I found the 5.0's that I've driven to be more invigorating, with the same reliability as the 5.4, and better MPGs as well. Also no crappy cam phasers to deal with.

I would tend to agree. But IMHO, the best of the lot is the '13s and '14s in this bodystyle. but if you can get the '10 at a good price, Id buy it.

I had a 2007 5.4 motor, now i have a 2012 5.0 truck, only thing i will say about the 5.4 motor is you better have a full bank account when you need spark plugs changed...Other than that 5.4 truck was good to me...

Oh I agree. Shopping used trucks myself, I was eyeing 13 and 14's. But for an equivalent mileage, you're looking at 10-15K more. I figured that since the OP was looking for 10's, price was a strong concern. But yes OP 13 Ford made great advancements in fit and finish. 13's and up are the best of the used trucks.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was considering the 2010 because it what a dealer had on their lot and it was a good price. I would consider a 2011+, but the vast majority of the ones I saw all had the Ecoboost, which I definitely don't want. If the 2010 is still available later this week/this weekend, I'll probably buy it.

Just out of curiosity, when did the F-150s get push-button ignition? That's one feature I wish I had.

After working on a 5.4 truck (chain guides and phasers...common failure on those engines) and then owning a 5.0 truck, there is NO WAY I'd buy a 5.4 truck. Working on those things is a nightmare. Half the engine is up under the cowl where you can't get to it. They also are weaker and use more fuel. I personally would hold out for a model year newer.

On any of these trucks, one thing I'd check is the HVAC system. Check it thoroughly and make sure all modes blow air to the proper places, the temperature dial works, the fan speeds work, there's no clicking behind the dash with the heat all the way up, etc. These things have rampant problems with the blend doors and actuators and repair can be expensive and time consuming.

I've also heard from a Ford tech that 3rd brake light water leaks, driveline clunks, etc. are also common but I don't seem to have those problems with mine so far.

Sounds like a nice find. 40,000 miles is low. I've had 2 F150's with the 5.4 and the engine was rock solid in both. I took mine to the dealer when it was time to change spark plugs. It was less the $300 on both trucks. My wife had a Chrysler with a Hemi 5.7. That thing needed plugs every 30,000 miles and cost $600 each time, so in comparison the 5.4 was cheap.

Well unfortunately the truck I was looking at was sold before I even called, they just didn't take it off their website. I will continue to look for another Platinum, but I appreciate all the comments. As a result, I may look specifically for a 2011 with the 5.0.

IMO...$115.00 JUST for 8 sparkplugs for a 5.4 motor is not cheap...

Just curious why you won't consider an EB truck. That and the 6.2L engines were the top-level engines for those years, and they both seem to have been holding up really well.

Stalking here because I have the diesel noise and actuator (Bride Side) problems.... Just bought a used 09 lariat 5.4. No history on it.. Runs fine at high rpm but clacks at idle and on occasion will shudder and clack in the drive-thru. Thanks in advance!
