I'm needing to buy my son a vehicle, but I don't have a lot of money. I've found a 2000 f150 xlt with the 5.4 litre engine and the 7700 package. It has almost 125,000 miles. I know that's a lot, but it's a truck we can afford. I'm wondering if the 5.4 has been a reliable engine and what they think of those trucks. This one has an automatic trans and seems to run really good.
I am his son by the way, but what would be some warning signs to look for any easy ways to check how hard the motor has been worked? I drive back 230 miles to Auburn once a month, and back. I want a truck that looks and sounds good this does both. But at the same time i need it to last a while. Our budget does not allow something with lower miles wish it did but doesnt, how long if properly cared for can this engine last?
One thing to know is that the 7700 package is a "heavy duty" half ton truck. whoever bought this truck new planned to work it harder than a regular half-ton. Check for normal signs of abuse in the suspension. Has a plow ever been fitted to the front?
Not saying it's a bad deal, just saying someone was planning on more than sunday drives in this truck.
It does not have any signs of have a plow on it ever i am guessing signs for that would be a front hitch which it does not have. the suspension seems to still be pretty stiff.
I'm not sure it has been here all its life, but plows are pretty rare in these parts (Alabama). It was set up to tow. The salesman said that it had towed a horse trailer.
I'm planning to take it to a mechanically inclined friend tomorrow.

That is exactly what I was thinking, When I was looking for a truck a few years back I was leaning towards the 7700's....but after several inspections they were all "put through there trials" so to speak. People who buy these trucks generally use them for which they were intended, not trying to scare you off from this truck but I would get it checked out for your own piece of mind.
I'll give you the proper warning since i bought mine like this......CHECK THE HEAT AND AIR BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!
But these trucks can last long after 125,000 miles if they are takin care of. A friend of mine drives his dads old service truck a lot and it runs fine (f-150 7700). It has 239,000 miles on it i think....if not it's pretty close to that, i know it is in the 200,000's.
If I were sending my son off to college in a vehicle that he is going to be traveling distances in and knowing he can break down a long ways off, I would consider that possibility into what you can really afford. He may have to lower his standards of cool and you have to raise the bar on price to come to a happy medium. A call from long distance requesting 2 or 3 thousand for a new transmission or major engine repairs may break the budget for some. Especially if its more than once or twice over a couple years.
If you are financing it, another 100.00 per month might be easier to swallow than a few thousand at once. Depending on his age and driving record it will be substantially less expensive to insure a V6 not to mention fuel economy. Dont settle for anything older than a 2000 for sure. A V6 sport truck would be a very nice choice for a young college student. When he gets that education and becomes a doctor or lawyer, he can buy all kinds of cool vehicles, and one for you too. IMHO

my old 2000 5.4 had 107k on it when i sold it, it was a great truck in everyway... i personally saw an expedition with the 5.4 that had 209k on it with absolutely nothing but a tranny rebuild at 190k,
Fuel economy is a good point, don't expect anything over 15mpg and 12mpg wouldn't surprise me. I have over 200K on my '97 5.4L and I still drive it hard. 2000 MY didn't have a ton of problems like he '99s and early '97s. One thing is the maintenance is a bit pricey on these engines since stuff is so hard to get to on them. I bought my '97 in '99 to go to College and it has been great to me. I'd get an OASIS report on the truck and see what has been done to it, the report will tell you everything a Ford dealer has done to it. Also the dealer it is at should give you the previous owners name unless it was an auction vehicle. If it is a Ford dealer I'd have them do a 100K mile tuneup on the truck unless they can prove it has been done.

Not always true. I have a 2000 5.4 with the 7700 lb package. Bought the truck new to pull my boat 75 miles to the lake in the spring and 75 miles back home in the fall. Searay 220 @ 4500 lbs with the trailer.
I have always had the dealer do EVERTHING on the truck including the oil changes every 3K miles. 77K on the truck now and not any major issues. IF I were selling the truck today, this would be the kind of truck and previous owner I would look for.
This truck would be one hell of a find! New 2003 Lariat leather interior to boot!
