Turbo Noise
I recently installed a EGR delete and new oil cooler. After I got it back together everything was working great. After driving a couple days I started noticing a vibrating noise when I accelerate. This truck has always made some sort of vibrating sound so I didn't think much of it. I did however notice that over a couple of weeks it started to get a little louder.. or maybe it was just annoying enough I noticed it more... Anyway after driving for a couple of hours the other day I pulled up to a stop sign and the truck started making a sort of whistle noise. When I accelerated it stopped. For the next 10 minutes home it would only make the sound when I was either completely off the throttle or just barely on it. Of course when I got home it stopped and I couldn't make it do it again. I had noticed that I was still blowing a bit of coolant out of the cap and I checked the cooling system pressure which has confirmed that I do have a head gasket leaking. So I kind of thought that maybe the noise was the "tea kettle" noise i hear so much about. I have driven the truck for about another week now and the noise is getting worse. Tonight I had time to pull it in the shop and it did keep making the noise when was sitting at idle in the building. After listening around the engine it sounded like the noise was coming from the turbo or very near it. I hooked up my scan tool and while the engine was running I set the VGT to open and then the sound stopped. When I closed it the sound came back. I went back and forth a few times and it was the same. I can still throttle up a little and it goes away, however it is more consistent now that it was at first.
I have decided that even though I do need to get the head gaskets fixed that this is not what is causing the sound. After researching it sounds more like I may have a leak in either the bellows on the up pipes or where the pipes hook to the turbo. I was surprised to hear that was 99% of the answers to peoples questions about this type issue. I thought for sure something was going on with the turbo itself. I was relieved to read what I have read but I wanted to ask anyway laying it out with my experience and see what everyone thinks. I am wondering if the vibrating sound could be the pipe being loose at the turbo or maybe a crack that is getting bigger causing it to make a noise? As always any help is much appreciated.
Mike
